    Gerry Of Sumter Sc Chickens

Here's an update of my new flock. I purchased them as chicks from our local TSC on 7 March 2011, the second batch (mystery black breed) was purchased about a month later. This is my first try at building the page...sorry if it looks messed up as a final product once posted, but if it's screwed...

Best way to water the flock?

Quote: I dont believe this will be the system for you based on your winter climate. There's no doubt it will freeze during the winter even down here in South Carolina (on our worst days). I just googled Little Giant 2500 and got all kinds of returns (to include pictures). Here's a link to...

Best way to water the flock?

Quote: I posted my "report" on the nipple system with a 55 gallon somewhere on this thread about a week ago. Disregarding what many suggested...I opted to use the nipple system with my 55-gallon gravity feed system. Apparently the water pressure is too great for the nipples cause they leaked...

Okay, here's a silly one. Please tell me that my dogs aren't the only idiot dogs in South Carolina living with chickens (misery loves company). I've been letting my chickens free range in the back yard about an hour or two before dark to break the monotony of being stuck in the run and so I...

Quote: That's the first I've seen anything about an "outbreak" of sorts. Of course, most of us know that there are possible risks of salmonella, but when it appears to have been tracked back to a particular hatchery...hmm. I'll have to do some google searches for the Reuters report. Thanks...

Quote: That's where I get some of mine, too. It is 6 miles from my house. I just came back a few minutes ago and now need to go unload it because storms are piling up and I hear thunder. Need to lock up Jolie, too before she has a heart attack. Though she is better now that I put her dog house...

Best way to water the flock?

Quote: Very good point! I never thought about how easily mineral deposits could affect this particular system. What did you have to resort to...a standard waterer? I suppose water with high mineral content would jack up a nipple system rather quickly too! Bummer!

Is buying feed cheaper at a feed mill/store than say a big commercial business like TSC? Personally, I would rather support the "little guy/gal" in town than the nationwide business chains. Anyone know of any feed stores near Sumter/Wedgefield?

Best way to water the flock?

Just wanted to give an update to my previous posts on this subject. I bought a 50 gallon rain barrel with a faucet in the bottom and set up a gravity feed system for the chickens using the nipple system with a 4ft length of PVC Pipe. Like a few others mentioned here...even though the birds...

Quote: I've got a "mixed bag" of breeds that I bought from TSC on March 10th, that makes all of mine around 12 weeks old as well. That said, I can tell you that my coop/run looks like a pillow fight occured...because I have feathers all over the place. It started about a week and a half ago...

Quote: That's where I saw the best deals and was thinking about buying from. Thanks for the tip! Ivermectin is used to prevent heartworms. Just do not use it on collie or collie mixes. A lot of people use it instead of the medication through a vet but there are benefits to using vet supplied...

Quote: Be that as it may...I think paying $150 for the dog's shots and check-up should bring a prescription at no extra cost. You may carry the product, but charging $12 for a prescription negates the cost savings offered up through a purchase on-line. That's one way to assure we buy the...

Quote: Actually Heartgard and other heartworm medicines for pets use Ivermectin as the active ingredient. I tried buying heartworm chew tablets for my five jack russells not realizing that you had to have a prescription! My vet said he'll write me the prescription for use at 1-800-Pet Meds...

Quote: How do you keep grass in your run? I only have 16 birds and my run is 12 x 40'...the run has been stripped completely of every blade of grass. I've tried making elevated grass beds 2'x12' with 1" fencing over top to try and keep them only feeding on the grass that pokes through the...

I've got beetles up the Wahzoo! I raise mine on nothing but Purina Flock Raiser feed and some carrots/celery. I've had very few natural deaths...I added that cause I've left the chickens "slaughter" them! The next cycle I go through will have a bunch refridgerated so I can slow down the...
