Lav over Lav = BLUE?? Help, please!

I have only a basic knowledge of the BBS genetics, and this has me stumped. I bred my Lavender Ameraucana rooster over LA hens, an EE hen, a PBR hen, and a SLW hen. The results were as expected, except for one. One of the chicks (out of a blue egg), was blue. Not a dark lavender, blue...

Severe, ongoing sour crop. Next stop is euthanization.

I am very close to putting down two Copper Marans hens for severe, ongoing sour crop, which has resisted the usual treatments. Before I employ the final solution, does anyone know of a hail Mary, like an injection of penicillin, or something similar? Thanks...

Beer sanitizer to clean incubator before use?

I am preparing to incubate my first hatching eggs, and the new Genesis 1588 arrived FedEx yesterday. Question: Can I use the solution that one uses when sanitizing all the equipment to homebrew beer to spritz out the incubator and egg turner and let air dry? The product is called "Easy Clean"...

    Highest percentage protein for chicks?

What is the highest healthy percentage of protein for chicks? Setting aside the issues of blackhead (of which I am well aware) I would like to brood my three-week old chicks and my baby heritage poults together. Is there any way the chicks can eat the higher-protein feed poults require? Thanks.

Breeders of Blue Slates? Are you out there?

Having a terrible time finding breeders of blue slates, not hatcheries, but breeders. Anyone know of any? Thanks.

Desperately seeking organic feed near Albany, NY

Hellooooooo New Yorkers! I have a small egg operation going, and will be branching out into a heritage turkey breeding program in a matter of weeks. I am going a little crazy trying to find a line of organic feeds for my flocks (through all stages of life) that is local enough that I'm not...

My chicken is laying multiple fart eggs. What the...?

My 11 month-old BO has now laid 5 fart eggs in a row, no full-sized ones. She was a very reliable layer until a few weeks ago. I'm in my first year of chickens...should I be concerned?

    Dog Attack!!!

Short version: A pickup truck stopped at our country street corner yesterday afternoon. A pit mix in the back seat of the truck got a look at my chickens free ranging in my neighbour's wood (with her blessing, I hasten to add), and jumped out an open window to get to them. The owner was unable...

    Peppermint oil, mice and chickens

I have a small but persistent mouse issue in the coop. I would like to try the peppermint oil method of encouraging them to live elsewhere, but am wondering a) does it work? and b) would the oil fumes harm the chickens in any way? Your experience/expertise most appreciated, as always.

    A good neighbour story

I have read so many awful stories on here about neighbours, that I'd thought I'd share a good one. Before anyone flames me, I am trying to keep my chickens on my property. I watch them as closely as I can, and steps are being taken to set up fencing. But I am having a short term problem keeping...

    Winter Solstice and Laying

I'm in my first year of keeping laying hens, and nine of my ten pullets are laying pretty well, as I've read is to be expected in their first winter. I know the frequency of their laying is related to light (I have chosen not to supplement), but is it also related to temperature? In other...

    First hawk attack!!

Oh, my heart! I went out to check on my free ranging girls at 2 this afternoon, and saw a hawk swoop down over one of our small woods, one where the girls hang out. I didn't get a clear look, but I'd say the wingspan was about 3 feet, the under feathers were white, and the feathers on top of...

    Roosting Order/Placement = Pecking Order?

Has anyone ever noticed if there is a correlation between the pecking order in their flock, and where the girls roost? Or in which order? It just seems that the dominant hens should get first choice of the best spots, but maybe I'm overthinking it.

    Chickens and ponds anyone?

Our chickens are 8 months old and free range pretty much all day. We have been planning a medium-sized pond ( 40' x 44' x 3' deep) for a while now, and just completed excavation, added the lining, and started filling last weekend. So far, the chickens seems to be staying away from it, even...
