I have processed birds that i have hunted but never any that i raised myself. We have two turkeys that are ready for the freezer and i want to know the most humane way to...um..."get them ready" for processing.
thanks
thanks for the replies. it all sounds too much for what i want to get into at this point. it's amazing that eggs are able to hatch in nature with all the care thats required in regards to temp., humidity, turning & lock down.
i have 2 bbb's. I think one is a tom only because they are both the same age & ones snood is hanging over his beak while the other is little more than a bump. I have been getting one egg a day for the past 5 days & would like to try to hatch one. Any tips? temp, turning & how long to hatch?
we just started getting them. 4 so far. I was finding them outside where our chicks always lay in the nesting boxes & these eggs were much larger and white with brown speckels. Figured out they were from our BBB's. what a bonus! Ate two this morning (scrambled) & they were very good! Much like a...
You know you're addicted to raising backyard chickens when...you find yourself talking to them(for more than a few minutes)in their language & they answer you.
Well, we started getting eggs last week. (soo cool to raise something that feeds you without being the food). We have two partridge rocks & one white rock & have gotten 13 eggs in the past week. good sized brown eggs with strong shells. we've used six so far and three of the six were double...
O.K., I have 1 white rock, 2 partridge rocks & 2BBB turkeys all living happily together. Because our local feed store delayed us almost 2 months on the delivery of our partridge rock rooster we have kept him seperate but now want to introduce him. well, the gang of girls want nothing to do with...
I have 2 partridge rocks, 1 white rock & 2 BBB turkeys that are all about 4mo old ladies. I want to introduce our 2mo old partridge rock rooster to them as he is now too big to keep in the garage. how should i go about doing this & do i need to worry about them fighting?
we have our turks & chicks together too. Just 9 weeks old and no problems so far. they were together since they were born. finally got our rooster today (born yesterday)and more worried about introducing him in 4 or 5 weeks.
thanks all. the saltines work for some of them. i'll try rounding them up around sunset or just after. we've been doing it a little earlier because of the rainy weather(wife is worried they'll catch cold)they can go under the coop to stay dry. it's almost 3 feet off the ground.
My coop is in a 18 X 18 fenced inclosure and I find myself and my wife chasing our chicks around every night trying to get them to go into the coop. Is there an easy way???? We have 3 white rocks, 3 partridge rocks & 2 BB turkeys. The turks are easy, whites fairly easy, the partridge rocks will...
when i get home from work & go to check on my chicks,I great them with cracker crumbs(saltines) in the palm of my hand. they love them!
is it O.K. as a treat?
i've noticed that at the end of several peoples posts, they list their animal breeds & a little about their families, kids/spouces,etc.
I see alot of people listing...DH. what is it???
I was told that the turkeys would bully the chicks & peck their feathers off. They get along great & dont even fight when I hand feed them. I'll just keep an eye on them. I agree. the turks propably think they're just big chickens. Thanks for the replys!
I have two bronze turkeys less than 2 months old living with six chicks of about the same age. They all get along very well but i've been told that they cant live together in the same coop. do i need to build and fence in another coop for the turkeys? Do the chickens need to be fenced in or will...
at what age should i clip a wing on my turkeys? My pen only has a 4 foot fence & I havent figured for a top yet.
Will 2 turkeys cohabitate with my 6 chicks? they are growing up together right now but not quite 3 months old.
