Something got in but luckily didnt kill anything....yet

This is either claw marks or teeth marks, I dont know. There was a pretty good sized hole under the door as well. Thankfully, the girls were put away for the night. Otherwise this may have been a different post. We added 3/8" plywood 18" down into the ground today. I hope this helps...

Can my chickens eat hubbard squash?

I know that they can eat pumpkins and such but can they eat this type of squash? I bought a huge one at the store the other day and was hoping they could. I am also hoping it distracts them enough to stop pecking each other! LOL Thank you!

Trying to hang cabbage....someone help! LOL

How do I even get thru the "stem" to make a hole? I tried using a wooden dowel to bang it thru and the dowel busted so I had to cut the cabbage in half. *sigh* Totally defeated what I was trying to do. Any suggestions to to make the hole? Thank you!

    OK...more issues.......

I posted yesterday about a GC that is pecking some hens. She was put in her place by my NHR yesterday. I was just down there tossing out some snacks and there she goes pecking. Plucks out some nice small feathers off a a few girls, near their tail feathers...then...she ate it! Really...

    Pecking order?!

I have 6 chickens, 3 Golden Comet, 3 NHR and 1 RIR. The have plenty of grit, water, cracked corn and food available today. So I am changing out the water jug INSIDE the coop, they are all outside and all I keep hearing is a random "BAWK!" I watch and see 1 of my GC randomly pecking the other...

    Shivering chickens?!

Hi everyone! It's 14* or so here in Southern NH and I went down to do chores this morning. I opened the coop and there on one of the roosts was one of my girls. She had 1 foot up and the foot that was up was shivering. Our coop is small, not insulated. I just swapped out their cold water for...

    My bloody mess......

Came home this afternoon and the girls were "locked" out of the coop and stuck in their run. (The coop door had shut from the wind.) There is no food in the run, just in the coop. They still had water, it wasn't totally frozen over. One of my RIR has been pecked. Her rear end, near her tail...

    Sprouting success! :)

I read a few threads on this and was interested. I bought some lentils from the store. I have no mason jars or cheesecloth. Forged ahead anyways. Soaked over night in a water bottle, drained and rinsed once a day for the last 5 days, smell good, sprouts have appeared! SUCCESS! Yay! Thanks...

    Egg bound....HELP!

I know that this has been beat to death and I did do a search but it wasn't definite enough for me. I have a RIR, 8 months old, egg production has been down to 3 eggs a day out of 6 girls but I attributed it to lack of light in the coop since its winter time here. I noticed yesterday that she...

Need some help/advice please. **Pics included**

I have 6 girls, all have been lovely since they came to me as 1 day olds back in April. Most started laying back in August. A few weeks back, one of my girls comb and wattles had started going a paleish color, more pink than red. Seemed weird to me since they have always been red. Then, her...

    Moulting? Or something else?

I have 6 hens, all 7 months old, all are laying. I noticed yesterday, one is missing feathers on her neck and all you can see is the quill looking things. Her comb is a bit pale and her tail isn't as high as normal. She is eating and drinking normally, clucking away. Is she too young to...

    lice/mite treatment question

My chickens do not have this issue but I have a product question. My aunt and uncle own an Agway feed store and dropped off "essentials" that we may need for the chickens since this is our 1st time raising them. One of the products was ProZap LD-44Z Insect fogger. Has anyone used it? Is it...

    I think I have a broody hen?

Went down yesterday to collect eggs and a hen was in a nest box. I left her be and did what I needed to and moved on. Went down 6 hours later, it was dark, to shut the girls in the coop for the night and I see the chicken still in there. I prodded her with a stick and she didn't move or make...

I have a girl that insists on kicking out everything that is in the nest box. We have tried almost everything I think. She likes a nice thin layer of hay in there we have finally figured it out, I think. In light of the nice thin layer, this is what I get every day in at least 1 egg. The...
