    pullets wont turn to hens

So a ways back my mini flock got ruined by a opossum. Nightly it would kill one of my hens. Till all but one lone Australorp remained. We built the flock back up out of local chick deals on CL. Ok, so Rowdy the Australorp is pretty **** good layer. She hardly misses a day. And I knew we'd...

    mystery attack

Or maybe fratricide? I had a hen setting on a clutch of at least a dozen eggs. This morning I see her wandering the run with the rest of the flock and a bunch of feathers strewn about. Maybe they're hers or maybe some other bird's. And her clutch is smashed. Moreover the dozen or more eggs...

chicks coming in the next weeks

Ok, I have a broody hen doing a fantastic job sitting for 1 week so far. If/when she hatches out some chicks what do I need to do? Do I take them to a rubbermade and raise them a few weeks? Or will she do all the mothering? I guess I need a little chick water feeder and some smaller chick...

    Itchy hen

I just yesterday saw a hen pull a nice scratch. I have always seen them scratch their heads with their feet. But this hen wiped her face back and forth on a limestone paver like she was sharpening a knife. Pretty funny stuff.

how to get girls in the brood?

So, I have a tiny little flock. 3 young hens and 1 roo that's 2 years old. Are these young hens likely to sit on any eggs? What can I do to help get some chicks? They have 2 milk crates to lay eggs in and they had been using them both. But now the 3 girls all lay eggs in just 1 of the...

    wtb near central indiana

I am looking to add a girl or two to our flock. We have some plain old barred and speckled hens and a barred cock. Now we want some fancy chickens. Some of those silkie, sizzle, frizzle, polish ones, maybe some cochins, whatever. Let's see what's available, no rush. So if this thread sits a...

anything that a chicken should NOT eat?

Chickens are not the smartest of animals but they do seem to avoid some stuff I offer them. For example, they steer clear of bell peppers, hot peppers, and bright/furry caterpillars. I throw all sorts of stuff into their pen. Onions, noodles, potatoes, et cet. Today I tossed them an old...
