    Red Shouldered Hawk behavior

I posted yesterday on the "Raptor Migration" thread about my experience with a few Red-Shouldered Hawk. Only just identified them...I am in South Florida. A weird bird to be sure.

    Armadillo

No....and they are nearly blind. In Argentina they fatten them and eat them. They dig around looking for grubs and stuff.

Raptor migration season - watch out!

I just googled hawk calls....it definitely is the same sound as the red-shouldered hawk....not the red-tail. http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/41/_/Red-tailed_Hawk.aspx I will take a pic of mine and see but this is pretty darn close.

Raptor migration season - watch out!

I am in West Palm Beach, Florida. We have it all....Hawk, Eagle, Yotes, snakes, Bobcat (just lost 3 adult Swedes last week), coon, possum, you name it I've seen it. I will try to get a pic because it seems whenever I let the ducks out they show up. I am fairly certain that these are either...

Raptor migration season - watch out!

I am so glad you bumped this up. I have been battling hawks ever since my broody duck hatched out 12 ducklings. I have thrown my flip-flops at them....plastic pitchforks...sticks....rocks....even hit one with my wee pellet gun. They are smallish white and tan speckled guys. They are much...

Has anybody been through a hurricane with their flock?

Luckily it appears that it won't be hitting us in West Palm Beach. We may still get hard rains and wind from the bands. The chicken coop is attached to our barn on the south side. I will bring my chickens in to my shop that is attached to the house. The duck coop is attached to the north...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Been a long few days. We have 11 so far. One hatching now. One didn't make it out of the shell. I have 21 eggs left. Momma bailed to care for the newbies. Whats the old saying....a bird in hand? So I am going to do a float test on the remainders. Anyone close to Lake Worth...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Got to get a closer peek after sitting in there for what seemed like hours. 3 more pipping as I type. There is an egg that definitely has something solid in it but it has an obvious dark ring around the center as if it was dunked like an easter egg. Bad? I truly lost count while trying to...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Quote: My goodness thats alot of eggs. And therein lies the problem. Obviously some got snuck in there when she wasn't paying attention. She is most definitely NOT going anywhere for the moment. Super aggressive and will not get off the nest. I have food and water close to the nest and...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Morning! My Broody Blue Swede is now the proud momma of 6 (so far)! She has gotten nastier as the eggs hatch and she still has a pile of eggs underneath so there is no telling how many more. I am leaving her to the task and provide food and water and the occasional "well done"! I have her...

    One Chick!

Well I had one of my Swedish Blues go broody some time ago. I have had one egg explosion...YUCK! I have removed 5 eggs that were newly layed. She is sitting on at least ten if not more eggs....I think we have both lost count. I have candled & candled & candled and gave up on that. Finally...

*Emergency* *large* stinking* wound* PLEASE HELP!! Gave Her a Bath

I have read stories like this over and over. Then about 2 weeks ago one of my girls flew into the yard with my terriers (terrors). She got grabbed and ended up with a huge wound on her back. I scoured the search engine here and listened to all the fantastic advice. We cleaned that sucker and...

Anybody interested in Swedish Blue eggs?

I have lovely ducks laying 2 eggs a day and I am 99.9% positive they are fertile. I have 3 males and 2 females and have personally caught them doing the nasty every night around 10 pm and I always have 2 large eggs in the morning. I have left them to see if the girls will go broody but so far...

    First egg!

Did a search and read that eggs are typically fertile for about 4 weeks. However, this is the first egg from an almost 6 month old Swedish Blue. She is with 3 drakes. Was wondering do I even bother trying to hatch or just eat it since its the first? She is not broody.
