I have a question on sexing a Dominique cross chick. The roo is a Dom, the hen a Welsummer. Chick (just hatched this morning :) ) is black with the white spot on the head. Can you reliably sex a Dom cross chick by the spot? The broody, btw, is Brownie, one of my EE girls.
Thx!
I wanted to "bump" this to see if anyone else has any answers. I'm on here researching the EXACT same thing! I'd been getting bumpy eggs from one hen for a bit, not white bumps though, her bumps are the same color as her egg shell (blue, she's an EE). But one day when I cracked one open it...
I just tried this myself with some day-olds. The hen had been broody for maybe two weeks. It was awful :( I put them with her at night. I watched to make sure things were okay. She looked confused, but seemed like she settled down. I left the coop (I'd set up an enclosure within the coop)...
I don't have any experience trimming chicken nails or spurs, but DO have experience doing dog nails. I would highly recommend the Dremel method! I love my Dremel, it is sooo easy, and less stressful for me because I don't have to worry about cutting into the quick. If I were going to do...
I originally thought I wanted 3. Then I started researching breeds, and there were so many interesting ones! So I ordered 4 more. Then hubby said he thought some "red" chickens would be interesting to look at, so I ordered a couple more, and when I went to pick them up they were putting out...

Ditto! City girl but always wanted to be a country girl. Live in the country now, soooo happy to have chickens. I hope my roo's crowing doesn't bother the ladies across the road, but we ARE in the country! I loooove hearing my neighbor's cows, etc.

Aww, that is terrible! My little Seabright roo is so entertaining, but CAN be evil!!! I was tolerating but trying to train him to not try attacking me, but the day I saw him actually start to fight with one of my hens was almost the last straw. I threaten him all the time "You see...
I had a similar problem with my girls roosting once their coop was done. I think part of my problem was that before their coop was done, they were sleeping in an extra large dogloo / doghouse. When we moved them into the coop, they were so used to sleeping on the "floor", I don't think they...
"Pets with benefits", I like that description, and I guess that is what mine are They are not on the same level as my dogs, I guess I think of the dogs as my kids and the chickens as my feathered friends. I've always wanted chickens, not sure why! I *think* I could eat chickens that I've...
Ours is @ 100 ft from the back door. The building was there already, we converted one room into the coop. It worked out pretty well, because when we put the dog fence up, we fenced from the house to the "house side" of that building. So when we did the coop and chicken run, we made it...
I have a couple of related questions. One is regarding the straw in the coop, I thought you had to be careful because it could have a certain kind of mold in it? Do you just dump it in there? I have pine shavings on the floor, but our coop is not heated and I have thought about putting straw...
Is your coop insulated? We do not have heat in our coop, nor electric, and it seems to me that the chickens' body heat keeps the coop a little bit warmer inside the coop than the outside air temps. Not a lot, but when you are talking about water freezing it seems like that few degrees makes a...

Now THAT scares me!!! I started with a variety of breeds that I was interested in so I could see which I like the best, Buckeyes were on my list, but were unavailable by the time I was getting chicks last year. So far my Dominiques are my favorite, and I was leaning towards...
Anyone use a processor in the NE Ohio area? That Plucky's is a little far. No plans to eat any of my birds yet, but like to be knowledgeable just in case! Just started this year with chickens, and they are pets, but am interested in maybe raising some for meat in the future. My dad suggested...

Ugh. Been there too. Now I open the coop and before I get my shower I learned to switch my schedule around after my dogs continued to get my work clothes dirty as I was putting them in their kennels before leaving. DUH MOM! Chores first, then shower
Thank you all! The dog crates are an excellent idea, and I have plenty of those. Aside from biosecurity issues, I wasn't comfortable with the idea of strangers walking around on my property. Call me paranoid, but I am the daughter of a policeman Heck, even my Akita kennels are padlocked...

I would LOVE to do this! Already live in the country, just need to do the "quit your job" and "become a chicken farmer" parts. Guess I should pay off bills first though
I am considering selling a few of my pullets. I haven't decided for sure yet, but I want to add a few more chicks in the spring, and hubby I think wants me to get rid of a few I have now, not sure why, it's not like 3 more make a difference when you have 10 now And one time when I said I...
