Thanks for the input. I sorry I've been slow about getting back on line. I love the sand as bedding it's so easy to keep clean and the girls seem to like it but I am concerned about using it in the winter months I think I will ad some wood shaving. It snow her yesterday and the girls didn't...
I'm new to this so take it with a grain of salt. I started out with shavings and after about 3 months I decided to try sand. I had read on byc about it and it was very cheap at local gravel pit. So I clean out shavings and put in about 2" of sand in coop and run. I really like it so far its...
One of my 6 month old BO is missing feathers on left side near tail. Has bare spot about the size of a quarter. Other than that she seems fine. Any ideas.
Yes my concern is them getting really wet in this rain that suppose to last a couple days and then cold nights Thanks for the help I probably am over thinking it.
I've noticed that my hens will stay out in the rain. Now that it's getting colder should I keep them shut up on days like this. It' been raining all day and suppose to continue. Today's high is 52 and low 30's tonight! Thanks for your thoughts
I put 4 BO 5 mo, old in with 2 Dom. hens and after a few days the 2 older hens had 1 of the bo pined in the corner of run, had all feathers off top of head. We separated them for a couple days. they are back together now but bo are totally buffaloed they won't go out in run with the hens. when...
I raised some buff Orpington pullets they are over 5 months old I give my daughter 4 she already had 2 hens about 1 1/2 years old. I took them at night off roost and put them in her coop on the roost. I was told this would work. Its been over a week now and at first there was a lot of picking on...
I recently switched to sand both in coop and run. So far I think its great, with just an old leaf rake I can reach all the way to the back of my coop and rake droppings to door. It only take a few minute to clean coop and throw it on the garden. I like it in the run to but might try covering it...
Update on changing to sand. I rake my coop and run this morning with an old leaf rake and it was easy to remove the dropping. So far I like the sand much better than shavings. We have finally gotten some rain and I think I will someday cover my run with a tarp to keep it dry.
Thanks a lot for the help, the article was very good. My big concern was that my girls are young and just starting to lay. Only 4 out of 10 are laying I was concern the shorting of light & I might not get all laying this year.
My pullets are starting to lay they are 5 months old. Now that the days are getting short should I add more light to help keep them laying this fall and winter? If so how much do they need? Thanks for you input
I made a feeder from a 5 gal. bucket with 1" holes drill in bottom of the sides using a large feed tub on bottom of bucket. It worked great at first then I notice feed spilled out on coop floor. This happen after I hung it up on chain to raise it up as the girls got bigger, I think they are...
When I finished my first coop (5x8) I went with the deep litter method and didn't like the dust. So today I went to the gravel pit and got a 3500# of sand that is washed out of the gravel. I think this might be river sand cost $10 cleaned out coop and put in sand and the rest in my 12x18 run...
I used metal on roof with foil cover 1/2" 4x8 sheets of foam insulation underneath It was left over from another project time will tell if it was a good idea. I'm trying to decided how much I should close up coop in cold weather. I'm thinking leaving roof & eve vent open and closing gable vents...
