    Polish Rooster's Head Feathers

I had this problem with my Polish hens. The other members of the flock constantly picked on them, plucking all the feathers from the topknot of one of my Buffs! Fortunately we have a large hen house, and I created a Polish wing for the 6 Polish girls. I wish I had a rooster for them, that is the...

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Hi All, I'm in Vermilion, Ohio, and need a rooster. A really nice rooster. I lost my dear Bert a few weeks ago, and the girls all miss him too. He was a Rhode Island Red, very sweet to the girls. Will travel in state to pick him up. My girls are almost a year old, so I think he should be around...

Polish hens in a mixed flock?

My Polish girls are my favorites. I came home one day to find a buff polish on the ground with all the feathers in her topknot pulled out! Our flock of 37 are of various breeds, but the Polish girls are the smallest and tamest. I found they were all losing feathers over time. Fortunately we have...

    RIP Bert. My wonderful rooster.

That is good news! I had thought it was a one shot deal, sperm that day, fertilized egg the next. I will see if we have any fertilized ones when I get home. Thanks for offering me some hope!

    RIP Bert. My wonderful rooster.

I'm afraid he's already been buried. And the eggs refrigerated. Sigh.

    RIP Bert. My wonderful rooster.

RIP Bert. My wonderful Rooster choked on something and my husband Jim found him dead in the hen house. Bert was a very caring husband to his hens, dancing to woo them and clucking them in for treats. He would drop any treats handed to him so his girls could have them. He would inspect...

Szekely Farm Frolics Life and fun on the Szekely Farm, Vermilion, Ohio Calamity at the Farm! Last night I had band rehearsal and DH was at work. I got home about 9:30 PM to find that one of the chicks had closed the coop door with 33 of 50 still out in the yard! Of course, all were sleeping...

Can I eventually turn off my brooder light?

I bet at 5 weeks they are pretty well feathered. Also, if the temp under the light is about the same as the area they are in, it is no longer needed.

    chick grit sand

As long as the grains are very small, it should be ok.

I have babies! And some questions...

Grit on the floor, in a dish, doesn't matter. The little ones will find it either way.

    NEW to raising chicks

Ditto on reading everything possible on this site, also the Chickens for Dummies book is great! I have several books and it was the best for info, including drawings of chicken and egg anatomy! No photos though. You can find plenty of those here.

    Brooder boredom?

It sure sounds like you are doing all the right things! As long as they have enough room to move around and sleep without getting stepped on, and are warm enough/cool enough I'm sure they will be fine.

Anyone thinking of buying chicks, LOOK AT THIS

It must be quite a sight. Mine are now in their coop with a yard. I want to go to bed before the chicks do! We try something different each night to get them to go in; treats, feeding, clapping my hands, reving the 4-wheeler! Left on their own they want to go in to bed around 9:30. I like to go...
