Great article! My chicks are due April 3, and when they are big enough, they'll get to free-range only when I'm home in the evening - too many predators out here on the ranch! I have a nice old hen house that I've cleaned out and refurbished, and the run will shortly be covered so they'll be...
Thanks to Bee and all the OT'ers who take the time to provide info here for all of us. I'm a newbie to chickens, although not to other livestock, and I definitely have learned a lot from this thread!!!
I'm living/working on a ranch in SW Texas (was brutally hot last summer) and there is an old...
I ordered from Chickens from Backyards - not sure where they get their chicks from. The size of the Welsummer roos at maturity is something I like from a meat perspective! Plus I think the Welsummer roos are beautiful!!!! And the Buff Orpingtons too!!! We'll see what works! Thanks again!
Cool, thanks! That helps a lot!
For the couple of years or so, I won't want to hatch any of my own, but that may come, once I decide upon breeds. I really like the looks of the Catalana, but they are really hard to find. I just need to experiment to see what breeds I like and which ones work...
I will probably end up separating the flock in the future, yes, although eventually one or two of the roos will probably end up in the pot as I understand more about their individual and breed traits. I will also eventually increase the number of hens once I see which breeds handle the heat...
I ordered a pullet and cockerel Welsummer, a pullet and cockerel Buff Orpington, a pullet and cockerel Gold Laced Wyandotte, a RI Red pullet, a Dominique pullet, an Americauna pullet and a straight run Favorelle. I ordered from Backyard Chickens - they didn't have any sexed Favorelles, but I'll...
Just out of curiosity, wouldn't it also depend on what part of the country you are in? I'm in SW Texas, which gets very hot about June, so I'm planning to get my chicks in April, where the temperature will fluctuate much less, and they won't be stressed so much by the heat while they are little...
Well, I finally did it! I ordered a variety of chicks (6 pullets, 3 cockerels and one straight run) so that I can see which ones work out in my area. I live deep in SW Texas, and I want to try a few different kinds to see how they manage here. I also lwant to have a few roosters to protect the...
Quite a few years ago, I used to live in unincorporated Jeffco, at Quaker and 54th or so - I used to pick up the bus to Boulder at 93 and 72nd ..... WINDY!!! and cold!!! We had looked at living up Coal Creek just a ways.....
Now we are down here in SW Texas, and the drought is terrible -...
Hi bt03!
Where are you out in West Texas? I'm in the Sanderson/Dryden area, and I'm interested in what types of eggers and meat chickens will thrive out here in the heat!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
thanks much!
Hi, I'm just starting out with chickens, and I'd like to get some meat birds in addition to egg layers.
I've been reading a number of the posts here, and it appears that the CornishX don't do real well in the heat - is this a correct conclusion for what I've been reading?
I live deep in south...
Hi, I'm Leslie, and I live deep in South West Texas.
We (Leigh and I) live on/manage a 25000 acre ranch down here, where we are responsible for (among other things) the hunting business (deer, turkey, javelina) and for caring for/handling/starting the mares and foals in the QH breeding...
