Honestly, in my non-expert opinion his chest isn't all that bad either. I think we get caught up some times in pictures that show a bird in a certain pose and they they look that way all the time. I've seen my roosters chest look like the picture of of the SOP book and I've seen him look like...

This to me is interesting. Since the Delaware's roots are in the broiler world you would think (generally) bigger is better. I wonder why the SOP chose the size it did. I do know that there's more to a good broiler then just size (ie how fast they grow and where that size is placed). K

So going in another direction... I have 3 Delaware pullets and one of them, well I'm assuming it's only one, lays double yokers like they're going out of style. I've had the odd double yoker here and there through the years but never anything like this. I'm finding around 3 a week! Is...

Well he's 17 weeks so he still might fill out a bit more, It does look like he still needs his feathers to fill in a bit more in the saddle. If it ever stops raining I'll go out and snap a few pictures. I have 3 pullets, none are great but they're what I have to work with. Plenty of black...

So...How long does it typically take for Delaware cockerels to truly take on their mature shape? I know they grow faster then a lot of other breeds, I could see it quite plainly as I hatched some other breeds along with my Delawares. The reason I ask is the rooster I kept seems to really...

Just imagine trying to explain to visitors that they're all really different breeds. Good luck! K

I'm not expert in Coronation Sussex but from what I just found using google I'm going to say yes, you will probably want to keep them apart. My one question is why you didn't throw some Colombian Rocks in for good measure? K

Their bodies types to my untrained eye look really good. I love how the tail sets, plus they look like bowling balls! Makes me very jealous. K

I agree. The biggest thing I've been disappointed with my birds is the lack of a "bowl shaped" breast. My culls admittedly were probably butchered a to young (12/13 weeks) but they were pretty darn flat. Lots of dark meat though (which is my favorite)! The rooster I kept to breed is OK but...

Oh no doubt, I agree with to 100%, I just didn't go into enough detail. I just wanted to point out that every breed can produce mean birds. My birds from from breeder stock so who knows how my Rooster is going to turn out. He's never come after me but he get a lot of curios looks from him...

I think you also can't just say X breed is friendly, they might tend to be friendly but that doesn't mean they're all going to be that way. I've been trying to figure out my rooster, he's either curious or trying to size me up. I'm going to go with curious since he's only 3 months old. Then...

That's what I see as well. I think I'm just going to have to deal with the tail. My pullets all have low tails. I only ended up with three girls (I had more cockerels but gave some away) so I really don't have much choice with them. They really don't look to bad though, one has green legs...

So it's getting to be the time that I need to pick a Rooster. I've got 4 to pick from, 2 really seem to stand out but I'll let the better eyes have a whack at them. BTW, they're all 14 weeks old. I know this is just 3 but the 4th is inside, he's hasn't really worked up the courage to...

FYI, the dead give away is the tail. Girls have a solid tail, boys have a barred tail. I know you got plenty of the "bad new", I thought I would pass on why they were so easy figure out. K

I had one rooster that right from the get go liked to pick on other chickens and even me. I would reach down to refill their water and he would come running and peck me. It was kind of funny when he was really little but by week 7 it was annoying. He's at another home now. The others more...

So I thought it was about time to show of my new Delawares, I'm sure joletabey would like to see an update as well! The one front and center screams cockerel to me, really him and all his buddies on the right do, on the right I see gals. They're all 4 weeks old. All the black ones are...

I'm not expert but from what I've read the green tint isn't uncommon among hatchery stock and even a few breeders have had to deal with it. They're suppose to be bright yellow, my guess is there's a cross somewhere down the line or hatcheries simply not carrying all that much and not removing...

How much vinegar do you use? Of my 10 4 week olds I've got 3 that I'm 95% sure are cockerels, comb and wattles turning red thick legs... If that ratio holds that would be really awesome. K

    Unhappy chicken

Well, she's no longer with us. She went from bad to really bad, wouldn't even lifter her head. Sad but at least she's no longer suffering. K
