Guineas need to stay in for at least 6 to 8 weeks before you let them free range so that they are absolutely sure where home is or they will take off. It is well worth the wait of the extra few weeks to be sure. They have their own rules and this will be one you won't have to worry about...
This is the 3rd year with my French Guinea Fowl - they do not go in until it is dark in the summer (they free range). And I have one male that loves to run around the coop half a dozen times before he will join the others that are more sensible and have already gone in for the night.
We just...
My Guinea's head for the road also - we live on a back road and darned if some of the cars don't speed up when they see the flock head for the road. I do not understand this since I always stop for chickens and geese... and turtles....well and sometimes frogs in the road...
Sorry to hear you...
And after all the worry, and adding an addition to the coop, the 3 Production Red youngsters are doing just fine the first night mingling with the French Guinea's!!:weee
I have a picture but can not figure out how to attach it to this message.....
Life is gooooood!
The continuing story...
My fabulous husband is putting an addition on to the coop (with my help - I nail and play general go-fer and hold up the other end of whatever material needs an extra hand for him) this weekend so that we can put the 3 chicks in their own area and get them out of the dog...
Your method is how it is going to go - I think.
I opened the dog crate door in the coop a little this morning (and whereas the guineas did not pay much attention before), wow as soon as one of my little girls left the kennel all hell broke loose in the coop. The pullet chick ran back inside...
Yea, I am trying to err on the side of caution. I have the 6 week old pullets in a wire dog crate in the coop right now letting the Guinea get used to them. When I finally decide to let the chicks out I have the door to the crate facing a wall so that the chicks can get out and get back in but...
Holy cow - 33 keets - just boggles my mind - That many would over run everything in my yard and up and down the street too !
I think you must be right about my French Guineas being calmer - they can be really really nuts sometimes -- like don't ever try to catch and pick one up - heaven help me...
I have not let my birds go broody, but according to the owner of the hatchery that I got them from, yes they lay fertile eggs. He told me that they do not lay fertile eggs when they are in production farm conditions (too many birds too close together, then they inseminate the birds...
Keets are are darling - Guinea Fowl are a challenge - but so much fun is mixed in - get yourself some white millet to use as treats when they get a bit older and then at least you will have a bribe to bring them home when they wander - and wander they will (train them with some call, I use...
Thank you for all of the information. I did start with 10 keets 3 years ago, mine are French Guinea's and I have lost 5 total to various problems, one frightened to death by a hawk, two just ran across the lawn and died mid -step, one I had put down because it could not stand up (splayed legs...
I have been told many times that Guinea's RULE - I think this means that they are the top of the pecking order. Was your white Silky getting a bit close to them or did they just decide to gang up on her?
I have 5 French Guinea's and I can tell you that they are strong willed birds. I have...
I am putting three 6 week old production red chicks in with 3 year old Guinea Fowl - today is the day. The chicks are still in a rabbit hutch, but after cleaning the coop out today (while the Guinea's were out terrorizing the bugs in the yard) and putting down deep fresh pine shavings, I left...
I have had Guinea fowl for three years - the best and favorite treat is White Millet - no other color or kind - just white - they LOVE it - all of them - in fact my new production red chicks go nuts over it also. My Guinea's will come from across the street or from out of the field if I yell...
This is just great - I have French Guinea's - what a gas - You are absolutely right - I remember thinking the same thing when mine were Keets - .... You need to train them to come when you give them WHITE millet as a treat. I call "Treat - treeeeat - treeeeeaaaat" and all five of mine will...
Yea, in the Spring and Fall I leave the gates to my veg. gardens open and one will inevitably get in there and it will start to rain (or whatever) and I have to go in and show it how to get out the opening - again.
Sooo, I finally got 3 cute little Production Red chicks to add to my 2 year old French Guinea Fowl flock of 5. Obviously it will be awhile before I put them together in the coop. Does anyone have any experience adding chickens to a Guinea Fowl flock? I figure I should wait until these little...
