Topic of the Week - Sexing Chicks

Thanks so much. Mine are cream legbar + leghorn. The color variety is lavender. It took about 3 years of selective breeding to get here. I'll try to post a link on the " how to ". This link should take you to the BYC thread of their development...

    Oregon

I'll be moving to Oregon once I sell my place in TX. TX has cheap land -- but a lot of downsides. Often I compare what you get for your money in both places and the differences are astronomical. LOL. Hope you find what you are looking for. Good luck.

    Lavender Crele

Here are some recent shots. Picture worth 1000 words...so no words needed. right? :lau He looked pretty bad in his last photo, didn't he? Now he has an odd comb, but doesn't look burnt on the ends. The result of that frostbite in my last postings. I love this guy's "type". Mostly his...

Glad to hear you're doing OK. The one roo does look completely different now. He is a gem. The other one, went psychotic. I think he was literally driven crazy by a fox that was just on the other side of welded wires, and little cockerel didn't know how to protect the pullets he was with...

The Polar Vortex ha d brutalized both cockerels. It's heart breaking they look like they were badly burned. Glad that I got comb comparison pictures before the cold. Thinking that he was in some pretty serious pain too. The next shot shows the process of part of the frozen/frost bitten part...

    Egg size

Wow -- that is twice the size of a "Large" grocery egg. To post a picture, when you click on reply -- there is a 'button' at the bottom with a paper clip symbol that says 'attach files'. When you click it -- it will ask you where the file is, and you wait while it uploads then you have a...

Official BYC Poll: What Do You Use Your Rooster/s For?

Neighbors can be really frustrating. Could you get a white-noise machine and thus cancel their racket without resorting to the laser option?

Official BYC Poll: What Do You Use Your Rooster/s For?

He is a variety I've developed that combines Cream Legbar and Leghorn. I think you'd say mostly Leghorn, except he weighs in at about 8-pounds. If you'd like more information, PM me and I'll send you links to the threads about this variety and how it was 'made'. Thanks for the kind words. :ya

    Lavender Crele

Just as he was coming out of molt, and I was making fun of him --- no big sickle feathers. Father and son aligned in two different pens...the apple didn't fall too far from the tree. The blue tarp between their pens is to prevent fence-fighting -- once their spring hormones fired up -- it was...

    Lavender Crele

Here we are with only 1 more night expected to be sub-freezing. Most of the snow and Ice here should melt today. A once every 10-years cold event. Probably my roosters have frostbite on their combs. A friend who knows chickens well was remarking 'that is one beautiful bird'. Yep. why do...

Official BYC Poll: What Do You Use Your Rooster/s For?

He is kept for breeding. Has unique genetics....lavender & autosexing. Some of his sickles drag on the ground. Sweet temperament. It's also nice that he is so handsome, but wouldn't say a yard ornament.

Official BYC Poll: What Do You Use Your Rooster/s For?

The one that is trying to crow.....:gig Seriously though, look very carefully at the comb. The one with the biggest, pinkest comb is probably him.

Shiva's very pretty. !! She has strong color. The ones I have at about the same age are still being slackers.

    Standardbred Leghorn Thread

Oh - in that illustration I think it is showing Exchequer Leghorns.... LOL I was focusing on the back and tail and didn't even think about plumage pattern.

Shiva shows a lot of nice diluted salmon in that pict. !! She's a pretty bird. Also a nice small comb. Which I consider an asset. Noticed today that my 3-year olds have folded combs and my 9-month olds all seem to have very small combs. One of those oldie but goodie books called it a...

    Standardbred Leghorn Thread

Perhaps a bit OT, however, the genetic relationship of long-back and higher-weight also extends to other species. For a decade on a ranch I worked with registered beef cattle and long back = heavier livestock. Circle back to the SOP differences in weight and in show winners for...

    Standardbred Leghorn Thread

Thanks for starting this thread. I'll be a subscriber too.... It will be so interesting to hear people serious about these birds weigh in. Like you, I seem to have trouble finding an in-depth discussion of type. Don't know if my birds are 'pets' or not...;), however, the Isabel genetics...

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

That's a remarkable plumage pattern. Many years ago I was interested in Brabanters which is the reason I subscribed to this thread. Then I just couldn't think of hens with Abe Lincoln beards and switched my admiration to Alpenzeller Sptizhabens..(spelling?) -- that chamois could be a game...
