Rose the Delaware -- pullet or roo

Any chance someone on here can tell me that our Miss Delaware is indeed a pullet? That pink comb has me worried.

    my coop is finished!

Oh my gosh. This was such an undertaking. I'm so glad it's done and I'm pretty happy with the result, but mostly I'm glad it's done and the chickens are out of my bedroom! Tips or suggestions for improvement? (But be gentle, please, I'm exhausted and was in way over my head!)

ramp too steep? pop door big enough?

I'm finishing my coop tomorrow! Time for the chicks to move out of my bedroom (the only dog-free room in the house.) One question I have before I move the girls in, does the ramp look good to you? I think the slope is probably fine, but I am worried that the opening isn't big enough. I've got...

    Rose the Delaware (pullet?)

We have been convinced all along that little Miss Delaware Rose was a pullet through and through, but I'm starting to wonder. We never suspected roo because she's the smallest of our flock. But they're all different breeds, so I guess that doesn't much matter. (Her flock-mates are Sophia the...

How to roof the peak of my A-frame coop?

I've been working away on my little coop and I should have it done by next weekend. Good thing, too. These chicks are getting too big for my bedroom. This isn't the most recent pic -- I've got the hardware cloth around the bottom and all the doors on. Still have to do the triangle ends and...

    Dorothy the Easter Egger

I'm thinking it's still too early to determine Dorothy's gender, so I'm starting a thread that I'll update weekly until we know for sure. Any guesses? 2 weeks 3 weeks. Someone mentioned to watch out for red around the shoulders?

    gender confirmation: Cinnamon Queen?

The local feed store said this is a Cinnamon Queen. Can someone confirm? I confess that I'm asking because I want to determine gender. Apparently red CQ's are pullets? This chick is sassy and squawks like crazy when handled. The other chicks we got are much more mellow.

Baby Chicks -- 2 weeks -- Salmon Faverolle sexing

Here are my adorable little chicks -- 2 weeks old today. That's a Cinnamon Queen in front, EE on the right, Delaware in back and Salmon Faverolle with its head out of the shot. Of course I'm dying to know the sex of all of them (the feed store said 85% pullets) but I know it's early. The...

    A-frame design experience

So I think I've decided on a design. http://www.re-store.org/images/stories/pdfs/diy-restore-coop_detail.pdf Does anyone have experience with this design? Or is there a similar example out there somewhere? My goal is to build the A's today and get as far as the flooring tomorrow. I'm brand...

    Coop plans for a super-beginner?

Hello all. I've got 4 little chicks who will be needing a coop before too long. I've been watching the Craigslist ads (nothing yet) and also researching building the coop myself. Just when I get too intimidated a friend reassures me that I can totally do it myself. I've spent hours looking at...

    fencing underground?

Hello all, It's been recommended to me to surround my chicken run with 2 feet of underground fencing to prevent rats from getting in. It's looking to me like most of you haven't done this, and it does seem like overkill to me. My compost heap isn't too far away -- won't the rats just go for...

    entertainment center = henhouse?

Hello all. I'm planning my chicken run and hen house and I'm trying to figure out a low cost solution. Here are the options . . . (oh, I'm planning 3-4 chickens.) Option 1 -- Convert part of my shed to a henhouse. I'd basically build a 2 foot high box inside of the shed with a little chicken...

help me decide what to do with this space

I'm trying to figure out how to make this space accessible to my little flock. I've got that chicken wire up temporarily. On the left is four foot high chain link and on the right is the side of my house. Here are the options: 1 -- Run poultry netting across the top from the side of the...

    Raccoons during the day?

While I was away on vacation last week my house sitter called and said that there was a raccoon in the tree that sits in my chickens' run in the evening just before dusk while the chickens were still out. My dog went absolutely crazy and the raccoon ran off to the back of the yard away from...

    composting and chickens

I posted a more specific question about my particular space but I wonder if anyone has anything more general to share about composting with chickens. What do you do? What is the best set-up? Is your compost heap right next to your chicken run or do you make use of the chicken droppings without...

    Chicken run question

My chickens have a fantastic coop that was built by a friend of mine (you can see pics at http://www.lifelessmessy.com/?p=727 Today I built a fence and gate for the front half of their run, but I have questions about the back half. I'm hoping to create both chicken run and compost pile out...

    chicken-trained dogs

Any suggestions on getting my dog to tolerate the chickens? My dog is usually pretty easy-going (she puts up with our cats) but when I tried introducing her to the chickens she snapped at them. This isn't matching up with my dreamy ideal of chickens and dog playing in the backyard together...

    rooster

We've got a rooster! Initially I thought sure there was a city ordinance against roosters in town but I called and there isn't. I'm kind of excited about the idea of keeping him. What do I need to know about keeping a rooster?

    fencing the run

I'm looking for the simplest way to fence the run for my new chickens and would love some advice. coop-and-fence by Meredithfp, on Flickr This pic shows the coop which is next to the side of my house. The run goes along the side of my house. It has the house on one side and a 5 foot fence on...
