I had to use 3-4 250 watt bulbs for my 25 chicks. But it was darned cold where I live! *lol* I still have three burning in the coop to provide light and heat for chilly nights. I shut them off during the daytime if it looks like it'll get above 75 degrees.
I could sure use some help in identifying breeds here! The bigger girls will be six weeks old tomorrow (Saturday), and the littler ones will be 5. They've all moved into their new coop, but haven't seen the outdoors yet, and I'm hoping to get a fence up real soon! We've got a lot of cats in the...
I have one chick, who, at five weeks, /still/ does a whole lot of snoozing and lounging around lazily.
I call her Lazy Sue.
But I did keep a very close eye on her.
I have a nearly 5 week old Golden Polish chick who... is bald. She has a ring of tall feathers around her head, and a large bald, somewhat scaly spot in the middle. I'm not sure if the feathers fell out or some other chick plucked her. She didn't seem hurt or frightened, and I've never seen them...
I, for one, am unimpressed with Saturday shipments. The mail is slow in Montana to begin with - and McMurray's, at least, sends them by priority, meaning it'll take at LEAST three days to arrive. My first order was... very poor looking indeed, only 8 survivors out of 29.
My replacement order...
*lol* I see how that sounded. They're 1 week old, and there's 8 of them. *lol* Sorry.
And I did get my chicks today (though I called the big post office 90 miles away and went and picked them up a day early just to ensure they got here safely) - and they seem to be getting along fine!
I would love to have them in the house.
My three cats, would, too.
Unfortunately, there's nowhere except my bedroom to lock them in inside where the cats cannot reach. I have two doors in my house - the bathroom, and the bedroom. But there's just no way... Even the bathroom is tiny and barely...
*giggle* I wish I had known this a week ago. I recieved a bunch of dead and deathly ill chicks in the mail.... and was worried anytime the poor things weren't standing up that they were about to die, so I'd hurriedly "revive" them with a guide to the waterer.
*lol* A week later, I see that my...
As you may know, I lost most of my chicks from my first order, so McMurray is sending me a new batch for arrival either today or tomorrow.
Will I run into serious problems just putting a bunch of new chicks in with 8 week-old chicks? Should I separate them for a bit, or will they be not so...
So I've read plenty on here about spending time with the chicks and handling them every day and giving treats so they warm up to you and all.
But... I have this kiddie pool brooder, right? And the chicks are terrified of me, naturally (earlier in the week (they're just over a week old) they...
Unfortunately, no trucks come into our post office on Sundays. I'll have to wait until Monday - which is just as well, because everything, even overnight mail, takes an extra day here. Last time, they didn't arrive until Tuesday. Which was probably the problem, along with cold weather.
Unfortunately, only 13 of the chicks arrived alive, and several of those struggled to keep up but just couldn't make it. *shakes head* I suspect an Easter weekend delay plus cold weather did them in. Either way, it was pretty devastating.
The hatchery IS making good on it - or trying. They're...
keljonma - the chick's feet are black on the bottom as well! She's a real skittish girl - hard to catch her to find out! *laugh* One drawback to a kiddie pool brooder - not too easy to catch them in!
Pics of the survivor chicks - at last! As said in another post, I recieved 29 chicks on Tuesday, but only 8 have survived thus far. Happily, they're healthy now! These pics are from yesterday, so there is one non-survivor in the group - I've put a pink dot on her. *lol* I have not identified any...
Mine aren't quite a week old. I took the paper towels out this morning, and watched them peck around a bit - but there was some spilled food in the shavings, and that seemed to be mostly what they were pecking at. They injested a few bits, but soon enough found the actual feeder and chowed down...
Oh, I've definitely notified them. I'll check into seeing if I can pick the chicks up in the bigger post office 60 miles away, since they will likely sit and stay there overnight no matter which night they arrive.
McMurray is replacing all of my dead chicks at no cost, this time with shipping insurance through the post office. We'll see how it goes. They should be shipped out this weekend, and I hope I have a much better survival rate this time. Perhaps they'll be more careful in packing and shipping, or...
It was pretty devasating. Especially to have them keep dying, as well. I've talked the issue over with family and I may ask them to replace the order. See if I have better luck the second time around. I'm also considering ordering through the local feed store, and while prices are cheaper, there...
