No, I never really received an answer....But the good news is All my Girls have grown up to be wonderful productive "Citizens" and they have been giving us a dozen eggs a day with regularity.
I have 12 Golden Sex Link girls that we got in late May when they were less than a week old. I built them a nice large coop and covered fenced outdoor run.
Our temps here are fairly moderate (with a couple of days this year in the 20's). I use lights in the coop and even have a red light for...
While, it doesn't really make a difference, I am wondering why our hens are only using one of our 5 nesting boxes.
In fact, this morning one hen waited patiently for another to vacate the box before getting in and promptly laying her egg!

Our first egg.
This was laid on 10-02-2011 and as of this morning, we have half a dozen.
But, we can't eat them for now........Since we did a worming on them. Our "safe to eat" date is: 10-11-2011 (14 days after worming)
FWIW: They have all been laid in one nesting box (we have 5)...
I don't think this girl laid the egg.....But she is still a purty lady!
Can you guess which Egg is the Golden Egg?
I just had to share......Personally (being the Proud Daddy I am) I think this egg is a very nice size for a first effort!
Thanks everyone for the Congratulations.....Am I...
I was standing at the patio door and heard (what is very unmistakable "HEY LOOK AT ME") Squawking come from the hen house!
I am sooo proud! One of the girls laid her first egg (about 10 minutes ago....LOL)
FWIW: The girls will be 21 weeks on Monday and are Golden Sex Link (RIR & RIW...

After the initial worming, reworm on the 10th day, then wait 14 days before eating the eggs including slaughter for meat consumption. Total time from start to finish is 24 days.
Thanks......The timings seem reasonable to me. Much Appreciated Dawg53.

Hi Everyone,
Our girls will be 20 weeks old on Monday. They are Golden Sex Links (RIR and RIW cross). We just finished treating 5 of them for Coccidia and they are all doing well, except for one who still seems weak (can't seem to make it up to the roost at night ) and she feels light...
Hi Everyone,
I thought I would weigh in on this, since our girls became infected with an outbreak of Coccidia.
Background: The wife and I went on a cruise to Alaska and left our girls in the care of my in-laws. They came in to our place twice a day (morning and evening) to care for our hens...
I have two timers on my lights in the coop. One runs three eco-bulbs for the additional light needed. The other one is an eco-bulb, but it is a red one that stays on all night, to provide the girls with some light to see their surroundings. So far, so good. They work like a charm, but I...
Hi Everyone,
We have 12 Gold Sex Links (crossed Rhode Island Reds x Rhode Island Whites). They just turned 10 weeks old on Monday......(Happy Birthday Girls!)
The reason for this post is my wife and I are going on a Cruise to Alaska in Sept and will have friends/relatives coming by to tend to...

Yesterday, my wife found a "Party Bulb" fluorescent at WalMart and we swapped out the 250w bulb for that one...........Worked like a charm. Maybe it has something to do with the red color of the light. I really dunno, but whatever makes our girls happy, makes us happy.
My girls will be 7 weeks old tomorrow and have been in the hen house for 2 weeks. When I put them in the coop, I had a piece of plywood (about 24" high) that I used to close off half of the coop. Within a couple of days, they were flying up to the plywood and then to the 12' long roost, which...

Thanks for the reply Dan................Your suggestion sounds good. I found this from my local supplier of feed, that was written by their General Manager.
"Feeders and waters should be placed conveniently throughout the pen for birds' access. Place the bottom of the waterers and...
Hi,
Our girls will be 4 weeks old Monday and I am in the process of building an automatic feeder, that I can load and maintain from outside the coop. I am building something similar to this:
I am going to make the horizontal tube about twice as long to accommodate our 12 chicks. Since the...

Yes we have AC, but the temperatures in Vancouver Washington have been cool (except for 85 yesterday) and I leave the heat light on all the time and odor hasn't been an issue, since the brooder is cleaned A LOT.......
I, too would be worried about the Coons, they are very clever and...

I thought I was crazy brooding my chicks in my bedroom right next to the bed. Glad to see someone else does it too!
Crazy is as crazy does.....LOL
Our chicks are 3 weeks old tomorrow and are getting very frisky! They have discovered they can fly the 18" to the top of the brooder...

Your question raises one for me also..........It seems ridiculous to me that lowering the temperature 5 degrees for 6 weeks is needed. So the question arises (for me) at 85 degrees wouldn't the chicks be "good to go" until they are given the keys to their new home?
