Is it really okay to feed my hens their egg shells back after we crack them open? Should I wash out all the stuff left inside just incase? should I only mix it with their regular food or can I just put a pile of crushed egg shells in their run? Thanks!
I have raised several batches of the same birds and this time is the first time in this cold of weather. Normally at 6 weeks I will get processed birds weighing 3 1/2 to 4 pounds, this time they were 2-2 1/2 pounds. So the only thing different was the cold weather, did they expell so much energy...

Wow, thanks. Like I posted it was in it's vacuum sealed bag the whole time and nothing leaked in or out (as far as water/blood). And I will most definitely cook it to the appropriate temp.
Thanks it's in the oven!
So I sat a whole frozen vacuum sealed chicken in a bowl of cold water to thaw out. Well I had errands to run and was gone 4 hours. Would you still eat it?
Thanks!
So a few of my hens were sleeping in the nesting boxes. I put basketballs in there for 3 nights and they don't sleep there anymore. But now they are sleeping on a really tall roost in their pin and not in the tall roost in their closed in house. Is that okay, when it's snows will they go in...
woo hoo. I love BYC! Thank you all so much for the advice on getting my hens out of their nesting boxes at night. It only took 3 days of putting basketballs in their nest at night to discourage them from sleeping in there. No more dirty eggs, well other than mud from all the rain. I...
woo hoo. My girls are 25 weeks old and today I got 5 eggs out of 8 hens. 3 brown and 2 green. We have 2 barred rocks, 3 BO's and 3 EE's. I sold my first dozen today too for $2.00.
I agree with other poster, you never know when the next one will come. I had an EE lay her first egg and then nothing for 4 days. I had a BR lay her first egg and then 2 days later lay another. Do you have golf balls or fake eggs in your nesting boxes, that encourages them where to lay.
Well I went out there and did some looking and I think the problem was they all couldn't fit on the 2 roosts that are above the nesting boxes so we made another one tonight. Hopefully this will cure the problem. But I may need to physically move them if they don't figure out that there is...
UGh, they keep sleeping in nesting boxes, which of course means poo in the box every morning! What do I need to do? They are 22 weeks old, do I wait until almost dark and put something in there so they can't fit in? Will this scare them and then they won't lay in there either? Help!
I have several hens one in particular is my barred rock who has had a huge red comb and wattles for over a month, she's constantly talking and still has not layed an egg. I know because we only have green eggs so far. They are all 22 weeks. The green egg layer (not sure who yet) has been laying...
I have 3 EE's and am getting 1 green egg a day. I haven't seen who is laying it/them. Should I think there are more than 1hen laying or could 1 EE lay everyday? I wish the other hens would get in on this laying egg deal!
I have
3 - EE's and 1 started laying green eggs at 20 weeks, the other two aren't laying yet
3 - BO's have not layed yet and are 21 weeks old
2 - Barred Rocks have not layed yet and are also 21 weeks old.
I am getting ready to place an order for more cornish rock cross from Mt. Healthy and noticed a "Bonus Chick" section. It says will send 25 free chicks (not cornish rock). Have any of you gotten these? Can I still process them and eat them? I don't want them if we can't eat them. I know I...
