what's a good farm animal besides chicks??

I've thought about a cow, but what kind of fence is best? I've known too many folks who do 4 strands of electric or high tension and the cows are constantly escaping. I'd want something that could move around too. I thought goats were escape artists- apparently, they have nothing on cows...

When can I expect less eggs because of no artificial lighting?

We have 50 laying hens, AND use light, and we're still only getting 4 or 5 eggs/day. I've not been impressed with the light so I'm turning it off to save $. We were selling dozens of eggs/week in the spring and summer, now we barely have enough for ourselves. Can't wait for the "good ole...

what's a good farm animal besides chicks??

We have goats and ducks. With only an acre, I would vote ducks. You have to think expense as well. With goats, you want the strongest fence available, they are escape artists. Plus, if you are going to milk them, they need high quality feed and hay (expensive). If you're just having them...

hard-boiled fresh duck eggs, question about peeling?

When I hardboil my chicken eggs, I try and let them age for awhile, then put salt in the boiling water, then submerge them in ice water to cool them faster. This seems to help with peeling... anyone know if duck eggs, hardboiled, peel any easier than chickens? The shell is a lot harder so i...

    recipes for duck eggs?

thanks, I'll try that search. Right now, we're giving them away to folks to use in baking. You really can't beat a chicken egg for "just eggs." I agree about the rubbery texture, I just scrambled some, and that's exactly how they taste. I use a dozen of them in breakfast casserole recipe for...

    recipes for duck eggs?

Our chickens have stopped laying but our ducks are really going strong. I usually use duck eggs in breakfast casseroles, egg drop soup, and for baking. Anyone else have some good recipes specifically for duck eggs? I can't eat them fried (too oily) or in scrambled eggs (strange texture)...

POLL: How much do you pay for a 50# bag of feed???

in southside VA, 50lb bag of layer pellet (not organic) is $9.95. I think it's outrageous, which is why our chickens free range for most of thier nutrition.

    PEOPLE WITH GOATS!!!

Quote: Is it common with goats though? You know like a dog would have complications before a cat would. Just a known fact, from what my vet told me. I had trouble with only one birth so far, one was a giant stillborn buck and the other a runt buck. The mom was having a really rough time...

    PEOPLE WITH GOATS!!!

a word about goats...don't skimp on the fencing. Get the highest grade strength fence you can afford. Otherwise, you'll be patching holes like we are until the cows come home. Better to pay more upfront for a high grade fence then to be patching the rest of your life. We have nigerians - i...

    No eggs

My 50 some hens are going through similar issues. The ones older than 1 year are molting, everyone has stopped laying. I remember this time last year it was slim pickings for eggs as well. We're getting 4/day from 50 or so hens...pathetic. I'm trying artificial light in their coop and I put...

    BEST SMALL TOWN COUNTRY STORIES

We moved from NOVA to Southside (Charlotte County) 3 years ago, where there is no stoplight. I love that people know your business but stay out of your business. I love the fact that my neighbor and I can barter, honey for eggs. I love the fact that I know the lady at the post office and...

Anyone have a design for a mechanical plucker?

thats a good idea too. thanks! Quote: Let us know how it turns out! Also, I would think that you could talk to a appliance repair place to see what they do with their "un-fixables"...they may be willing to give you one for free just to take it off their hands.

Anyone have a design for a mechanical plucker?

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I Know McMurray sells the actual plucker but you have to have some serious cash to afford that. We'll try and make our own. Thanks again!

We butchered 54 Cornish X yesterday....

Yes, I am. I didn't realize how much of my back and arm muscles I was using until I woke up this morning. We did it last year, learned a lot this year, and will continue to do it. Next year, better chicken tractor to move broilers around and a mechanical plucker. This year we bought a...

We butchered 54 Cornish X yesterday....

We butchered 54 chickens yesterday and today I am resting. Finished at 8:30 last night, and I popped 2 fresh ones in the oven...yum. Next year, we're making a mechanical plucker (my main job), this is the most tedious part. Also may divide up the batch into 2 shorter days vs. 1 very long day...
