Questions about adding light to a coop..

Ok...crazy question! I've been keeping a red heat lamp on my girls the last few nights because it's been below freezing. Would that be considered the same thing as just leaving a light on all night? I sure don't want to shorten their years of egg laying because I used a heat lamp! Any and...

    Head Shaking!!!

Quote: I'm curious how you treated them for the fowl mites. I used a poultry dust for mine but was leary about getting any on their head so as not to get it in their eyes. Three of my girls are shaking their heads like crazy but I'm wondering if it also has something to do with feathers...

    pooped pure water!

Nickie~ She might have a bit of heat exhaustion and IMO I would try giving her some electrolytes. It also seems as though she isn't eating enough so I would keep doing what you're doing with giving her the scrambled egg, try some yogurt, too. Hopefully others will come along to give you some...

Extream heat and cooler was not running. Lost 5 out of 10 hens.

I'm so sorry for your loss This is our first year keeping chickens and it has not been easy. I'm trying to take the advice of others to just stick with it and it will all be worth it in the end, I hope you can do the same.

OMG!! (Mareks??) HYPERICUM WORKED IN 15 MINUTES!! SHE'S WALKING!!!!

I tried Hypericum (St.Johns Wort) for 2 weeks with no improvement on a Marek's bird. Someone did tell me that it deadens the nerves and that once the bird is off the Hypericum that the symptoms will return. Not too sure about that, or anything at this point! Would love to hear more about the...

    Chick dragging one leg behind

Unfortunately this sounds a whole lot like Marek's Disease to me but hopefully someone with more knowledge than I will come along and give you some ideas. I only say Marek's because I've had the displeasure of it running rampant through my flock and know the symptoms a little too well. Mine...

My sweet baby is staggering around acting drunk. HELP!

Quote: Wow! 6-12 months? Mine are dying at 3 months! Ugh...just don't know how much more of this I can take. I looked up the Oxine on First State Vet Supplies website and am going to try to find that locally. I'm a little against paying over $18 for shipping. Lysol? Never even occured...

My sweet baby is staggering around acting drunk. HELP!

Quote: I know, I keep telling myself the very same thing. I've been cleaning like a madwoman, too, since it's the only thing that I can really do at this point. Is the hypericum working? Not sure...it may be too early to tell OR maybe it's not working at all. Very stressed out about the...

Roosters attacked Leghorn. Graphic Pics. Help :( ***UPDATE w/Pics!***

Wonder Dust is awesome! I used it on a leg wound for one of my horses years ago and it really worked great. There is another product that I absolutely love, it's made by Farnam and its called Trifecta 3 in 1. It's an antibotic cream with pain reliever built in AND it repels flies. I haven't...

adding to a flock with a history of marek's

Hi Poonam, welcome to BYC! Unfortunately Marek's is something that I'm currently dealing with in my small, and getting smaller, flock. I had an EE rooster that was euthanized and necropsied last Thursday. The findings were consistent with Marek's as were the symptoms. Then on Saturday, my...

My sweet baby is staggering around acting drunk. HELP!

Thanks Oobhakeb & Seminolewind. I'm just trying to see how this treatment works and of course whether or not it does. I'm wondering when it will end, too. Maybe when I cull my whole flock?

    Marek's questions!

Quote: I would love to know, too. I've been dealing with Marek's in my flock and there is so much confusing and different information so I will give you a bump. My chicks are now 11 weeks old and I was told by WSU's vet that it's not too late to vaccinate them but if they've already been...

My sweet baby is staggering around acting drunk. HELP!

No, the Orps haven't hatched out chicks yet, they're still babies themselves If we do wind up buying chicks we will make sure they're vaccinated and keep them in our basement until they are fully feathered, about 4 weeks or so? Hopefully that will help them build some immunity to it...

    fluid filled buldge

Good to hear! When I was new to owning chickens and first felt that fluid filled bump I thought OH NO! I brought the chick over to my husband who is also new to chickens but not to exotic birds and I got "the look" and was told it was her crop. LOL
