Is my hen sick or changing gender?

I have a 2 year old Barred Rock in a small flock--formerly 2 Barred and 2 Easter Egger, although we lost an EE to predation. The girls stopped laying after the death of their flockmate, which seems to have spurred their full yearly molt in November, then the EE started laying, then stopped...

    safe antibiotics for chickens?

When seeing my chook for bumblefoot, the vet--not a poultry specialist, but a poultry enthusiast--said that if I gave her antibiotics, I could never eat her eggs, and that there were no approved antibiotics for poultry. Anyone want to confirm or deny?

    Mites, lice: treatment options?

A mild winter + a week of wet = creepy crawlies. After our recent rains, I pulled out the chicken bedding and under the newspaper/brown paper in the roost, I found tiny dark grey bugs swarming around. Ick. My girls have shown some signs of feather loss. With the mud, no dust baths for a few...

    Tempeh for chickens?

Crazy question....hubby got some tempeh for dinner, and didn't like it. It isn't bad, just not the flavor we were used to. Can I feed it to the chooks?

Poopy bottom, starting molt: normal? How to clean matted feathers?

I have four chickens (two Easter Eggers and two Barred Rocks) that are less than a year old (started laying in June). One of my Barreds has been having problems with poopy back feathers. The others seem fine, and I do think perhaps the stool might have been from too much fruit (could that...

Malathion 55 dip: proper mix? Technique?

I have to dip my chickens for Northern fowl mites. The Malathion 55% that I have doesn't have instructions for dipping poultry. I have read 4 T. per gallon. Does that sound right? Any tips for a newbie chicken dipper??

    *I'm* getting bites: mites? lice?

So, I picked up one of my Barred Rocks last night. This morning I had bites all over my front. My EE has loose feathers on her back now and again. She is also the hardest to catch. Lice? Mites?

Anyone use Sawyer's permetrin spray in coop?

I think I've got mites. I picked up a chicken and found myself with bites the next day. I got these chooks at about 4 mo. I've got a little Catawba coop so I will clean everything out. I happen to have Sawyer's permethrin spray for clothing. Any thoughts on using it on the coop and roost...

How to rig nipple waterer on Catawba-style (a-frame) chicken tractor?

Anyone have any idea how to rig up a nipple-style waterer on a Catawba chicken tractor? Those are the A-frame kind with the roost on top. I have 4 girls in there and the run is tight enough as it is; I have to reach in to change the water and the girls think it's free-range time. That and...

Tuft of feathers sticking up on back...is she getting pecked?

One of my EEs in a flock of 4 (2 EE, 2 Barred Rock) perpetually has a couple of small feathers sticking up on her back between her wings. She's definitely the lowest in the pecking order by her behavior around treats, etc. Should I assume she's getting pecked? There isn't a bare spot (yet)...

    Are these Americauna?

These should be Americaunas, but I haven't found any that look like this online. What do you think? How would you describe their colors? (They are about 4 m o in this pic)

    Hello from Oz!

I'm a new chicken keeper and have found myself reading BYC posts for the last few months as I geared up for this new adventure. I finally decided to sign up! I'm the proud owner of 2 Barred Rocks and 2 Americauna (that look kinda silvery-lavender and buff, with black "beards") who I got just a...

    Osage orange?

We are "blessed" to have osage orange, AKA hedge apple, trees throughout our yard. What I would love to hear is that they are 1) nontoxic and 2) beloved by chickens. Any truth to either of these hopes and dreams?

    Moldy feed?

SO...I'm a newbie and have had my chickens (4 5-mo old pullets: 2 Barred Rock, 2 Americauna) for two weeks. I bought some Purina Flock Raiser from a certain chain. I've never seen chicken crumbles before so I didn't know what they were supposed to look or smell like. I've been feeding them on...
