UPDATE:
I took my girl inside in a tupperware container and put the peeping chicks in their box next to her. She became all excited when she heard them...I was going to wait til she was asleep (I separated her so the big blue orp wouldn't trample them) but she seemed so excited! I put them in...
Well, I got some "guinea pig" chicks (a black tailed japanese bantam, and a sicilian buttercup)... I took mama silkie inside in a tupperware container with some hay, with an egg from the fridge under her (I let the other hen take over egg patrol). I then put the two peeping babies in their box...
hm...I have 2 girls who are sharing duties on this one lonely egg. Will they share chicks too? Or perhaps fight over them? They've been broody for 20 days now, so they should be ripe! LOL
For some reason my 2 girls' eggs fell out of the coop and died...They were due to hatch tomorrow. Sad, I know. I want to know about how I can fool my hens into thinking some new day old chicks are the ones they so lovingly failed to hatch.
I've heard something about placing them in a bag so...
I decided to let my silkie and a blue orp try to hatch their own eggs...originally just the silkie was broody, but about halfway thru big blue decided to help her out... So they've been sharing duties... on 5 araucana eggs
Today I went out and an egg has rolled out of the coop door and dropped...
ok.... but it's really on there! I'm going to have to get tweezers to pull it off...
Should I move her inside so I can clean her often and so she stays clean? Or will that just stress her out more??
ok well I just went out and cleaned it with a watered down hydrogen peroxide...
I couldn't find any punture wound, but it appears here ear is completely scabbed over...I didn't want to remove the scab, so I just cleaned it.
All down her neck looks like it's been picked at and is rather...
This happend two days ago...the first day she was very lethargic but seems to be acting better and better, although the wound looks worse. I will work on getting the antibiotic....
The poor thing...
and it is DEFINITELY PUS. I mean, its yellowy/green
My STUPID FREAKING DOG attacked one of my ladies... she was dazed at first, weren't sure if she'd make it... Well, she has, she is talking, eating, walking, etc like normal...except
Here ear (or a puncture wound very near it?) is leaking what appears to be a LOT of fluid/pus like substance...
took my baby to her first dr appt today, and came home to discover my previously harmless 15lb italian greyhound had done in the littlest of my chickens... Didn't eat her, just wanted her to squeak like his fuzzy toys do, I imagine. I had no idea he had it in him.
The two other girls however...
They have white marks on their heads??? I didn't know that! Now I feel better, as shes got a little splash on the crown!
Thanks a lot! Hopefully, she's a she!
When do chickens go thru their first moult? My garden looks like someone destroyed a down pillow due to my white silkie preening...
I would be wary of putting the silkies out before they are of comparable size. They're just too sweet and wussy to stand up for themselves. Mine, anyway.
Thank you all.
Another ?
When do they STOP peeping (mine sound like they're screaming sometimes) and start clucking? My silkie, she buck-buck-bucks all the live-long day.
Oh, I've noticed that whenever someone posts pics which seem nice, everyone asks what kind of camera they have.
The...
My 3 week old BR spends her days perched on the edge of her brooder, which is on a counter 4 feet off the ground. She just sits there, doesn't really go anywhere else. Its funny. She just got relocated to a taller box though. I'm sure she'll miss her perch.
This is her last week. Just got a...
Well I just had to move my two little ones ( a BR and a gold laced polish) into a new, taller, brooder because they were roosting on the edge every morning. I don't know why they never really went anywhere, unless they fell off (and they're on a counter, so it's a ways, lol). Anyway, they are...
oh my! I never knew chickens had SO much personality. I love this one so much I think I might quit eating them !
I thought she was having some sort of seizure or something. I'm glad she feels comfortable around me!
