Oh man! I was worried about that. I've heard horror stories about getting rid of one rooster, I'm not looking forward to having to get rid of 2 in our small community.
Ok, so I'm totally new at the baby chick thing. We bought our original girls when they were almost 4 months old. Our RI Red went broody when she was about 9 months and was stubborn to outlast our efforts to stop the broodiness. Thus, meaning she hatched 3 more to add to the flock - possibly...
Oh my goodness! It looks like you are having the same dilemma as I am. I think 2 of our 3 are roosters, but possibly all 3. Mine look like all of yours, minus poached. I guess that may not be much help. When I can figure out how to post and add pics, we can compare
I've been "stalking" BYC for almost a year and have just decided to finally sign up for the forum. I'm planning on posting pics of our 3 babies that I'm thinking are all roo's. I really love being able to read about other people's experiences with their flocks and have found useful info with...
That happened to me too. I ended up mixing it with the rest of the pellets we had. Now, they will pick through for the crumble and finish the pellets last in the feeder. They are picky little things!
Can you have more than one roo in the flock? This is why we are looking at keeping one of the ones that our broody hatched in March, but would love to keep em all if we can.
We trapped 2 coons within a few weeks of each other and haven't had a problem since. I believe it was the decomposing body left out back of the barn that made the point. Dry cat food is the best luck we've had. Now, I'm fox patrol. Our girls are only able to be outside a few hours/day...
We had a Rhode Island Red that went broody at 9mos and has just begun letting go of the babies at 11wks old. She still keeps a watchful eye and will call to them throughout the day. It was frustrating that she was broody so early and so determined. We tried several different methods to curb...
I would also recommend putting in a "people" sized door somewhere in there so you can get in if needed. I just recently connected the "nursery" to the regular coop when the chicks moved in with the big girls. I've found it very challenging that I didn't make the connection very accessible to...
My older girls (1yr) wouldn't eat any treats for a long time. With my newest set (11wks), they began eating the same things the older girls did - that is once mama would let the chicks. She was pretty strict with the babies until the last couple of weeks. Now, she doesn't have much to do with...
