My Marvin Stukel pullets are turning 28 weeks tomorrow. Finally, yesterday, Dottie got in a nest and actually sat on someone else's egg-first time I've ever seen one of the BR pullets sit. Didn't lay her own, but seems they are just around the corner. I hope.
I didn't get any pullets from the GS line to even keep, Stan. Wish I had. Only one hatched and we had to put her down due to a hock that was twisted from hatch-just one of those things that happens.
Thanks, Karen. Since this is the Good Shepard thread, I won't post anymore pics, but at the time I first posted I was choosing between a GS cockerel and Rex since I couldn't keep two then. I did choose Rex so decided to post his picture here, but if I had more pullets, I'd have kept them both...
Here's my 26 week old cockerel out of Marvin Stukel lines, Rex. He's taken forever to begin filling out to match that big frame of his. Didn't crow or mate the girls till just a couple of weeks ago, but he's getting the hang of both now. Sorry, his wing was folded funny because he was turning to...
Here is my EB Thompson cockerel:

Honestly, I think I will be making a choice much sooner than five months, due to space constraints.
Yep, it's fine. Now, how soon would you think I could pick between these two cockerels? I'm leaning toward one already, but they're only just about to turn four weeks old and it may be just too soon.
Actually, I did, but had to put her down due to a severely twisted hock joint. Them's the breaks, though. I have two cockerels to choose from (actually, I have another EB Thompson cockerel, but he is extremely small) and some pullets, so it's all good.
I have no EB Thompson pullets, Nick, only Stukel pullets. Yes, I plan to use my two best BR hens along with the new pullets when time comes to hatch BRs again.
Kathy, I'm no breeder. I just love my BRs and wanted some that looked better than the ones I had. As you know, I have always had a BR rooster as head of my flock till recently and I miss having one, plus my own BR hens are aging rapidly. I don't want to be without BRs in my flock so while adding...

The first thing a rookie chicken person wants to do is get a five point comb on there chickens. They kill all the birds with good color and type and keep the culls that have five point on thier comb then they wonder what happern . If a good type gravey bowl rock has four or seven points...
I just wondered if you noticed that on some of the show pics I've seen lately, but no matter. I do think a great BR per standard is real eye candy! I don't think you can get a better chicken than a Rock anyway. Add some serious lookers to that, and you have the perfect breed in my eyes.

I agree with Kathy. First you get the type right, then work on the comb.
punky
Of course, but I wasn't talking about the number of points, but the uneven, pinched look to some of them.
I've noticed some really awful combs on these gorgeous show type BRs lately. What's up with that? Have you guys noticed it? It bugs me to see such a spectacular barring with a comb with 8-10 weird uneven points on it. I've seen them in several pics from different sources lately.
You're talking about kathyinmo, right? She's my buddy! Yup, I'll be getting some of those gorgeous Rocks next year. My oldest is 5, then I have two 3 year olds, a 2 yr old and her 1 yr old daughter, all descended from hatchery Rocks. Currently don't have a BR rooster--rehomed mine and the...
