X2 If only the back of the comb is bending as it matures you can work on straightening it out daily or every other day with a bit of oil. If the base is crooked, cull heavily until you get straight combs. The cock crests should be visible, though sometimes they do flow into the hackle. Best...

My oldest CL hen is 3, so I can't speak beyond that age, but she still lays 5-6 eggs a week during the sunny months. She does take a winter 2 month break though. My 2 cents: I would be very careful integrating them. First quarantine for a minimum of 30 days. Then introduce with a cage or some...

The roosters seem to be laid back or aggressive. Early handling will amplify their calm or aggressive nature too. Cull any aggressive ones unless you need them to be so for free range purposes. 90% of their male offspring will usually have similar temperaments to themselves! Best wishes!

Crests are usually apparent by 2 weeks though some small ones seem to take 3-4 weeks to be obvious. CLs are different than most of the other crested chicken breeds because they do not (or should not) have vaulted skulls. Always breed crested to crested! Best wishes with your birds!

X2, one of the Chilean hens ( most likely a version of Araucana) brought over to the UK by Elliott was the source of the blue egg gene, cresting, and the color cream in Punnett's work. Pease's Cream colored Legbars, different source of cream-Reeseheath Leghorn, lacked the crest and blue eggs...

Well there is a possibility that they are Legbars, or have a Legbar parent. Cream, no. Golden Crele, probably not, but who knows? Maybe you'll be able to tell better when they get their third set of feathers later this year. They both look like they could be pullets :D

Who was it that said that handling early on was a great way to separate the birds who would be easy going from the aggressive ones? They said that early handling would make easy going birds even nicer and agressive birds even more agressive.

Most of the CLs came from GFF. One other family imported them earlier, but had to close their flock. One other person in TX recreated Gold Legbars from scratch and used some GFF birds to bring cream, cresting, blue eggs in. At least 4 lines have been imported by GFF since 2010, but yes the gene...

To everyone having problems hatching, do you experience the same issues/successful numbers with a broody?

I'm not sure. But two ways to add it into their diet are non iron baby vitamin drops to water, or calf manna with their feed.

Extremely important. Vitamin D deficient chicks often fail to turn to proper positions to breathe, therefore drowning at around 17-18 days. So sorry about your chicks :hugs

I love the obvious crests, long backs, full breast, full bodies, yellow legs, defined salmon breast (at least in the top pic left pullet), and defined barring crest to tail in your 2014 pullets soldier! Some look to have some pretty wide tail feathers coming in too. The red one has a pretty good...

Can you breed the pullet to her father to check him first? Otherwise I think your plan of testing her brothers is a good one. :hugs

A lot of us paid $45 to $150 a pullet for our first ones. So the prices actually are coming down. Just please do your research first, because there are all levels from pet to show quality available now, and the prices should reflect that quality.
