I use hamster bottles for chicks. This is the first brood that did not come from the post office. Hopefully, mom remembers how to get water.
New question - how many days can chicks go without food and water? Dovey has not brought her chicks out to eat yet (hatched last night - I think).
Dovey's first 3 have hatched.
I successfully moved them to the mini-cooper.
I also moved about 18 eggs - the little hoarder!~
I am just playing it by ear, but in a few days, I plan to remove what has not hatched. I noticed that the ones I think I set under her, the white eggs, were...
One of my hens went broody last winter. While I doubted success, I did value her right to try. I moved her to the chicken tractor, and she stayed a long while. Then, one day, she gave up and started acting like a prisoner in the tractor. This was a factor in my letting this next broody do...
I don't have a bator, and if I can get hens to hatch, I never will have one.
In general, I prefer to buy chicks. I have a menagerie of heritage breeds. My Ameracaunas (plus the roo) are not good examples of the breed and lay green eggs. (I SO wanted blue.)
Actually, all my eggs have potential life, yet most are eaten. I don't know if additional eggs have been slipped into the nest because Dovey hugs it very closely. She makes it clear she does not want her brood disturbed, so I will let her manage the entire affair. Whatever Dovey does is...
O dear! I hope the flock does not kill mine! If they will, I need to know so I never do this again. I ordered chicks, so my 'private quarters' are already booked. I am putting faith in the fact that my chickens have so much space that they won't be aggressive.
Hmmm. I hope I did this right. On about day 3 of Dovey's brood, I removed all her eggs and put in the eggs I wanted her to hatch. Since then, I have left her completely alone. I did see her off the nest once, socializing, so it is possible some other girls have slipped in a few eggs...
Dovey, my year old Auracauna, has decided to brood. I am letting her do everything, with the flock.
My flock free-ranges, and the feeding station and auto-waterer is a long way from the coop. I plan to put hamster water bottles inside the coop, and also chick starter. Since I sell eggs...
