Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Wow - I don't even know where to start. I've been away from BYC for 2 days, and I come back to find myself 350 posts behind (took all afternoon to catch up, but it's a good way to pass a snowy day), and to find the ONLY OTHER thread I read locked and Bee gone! I'm over 120 posts behind there...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I've enjoyed the thread today. Al - WOW! That's all I can say. I'm thinkin' those birds would look like small turkeys once they're dressed out. The thought also came to mind that I hope you don't make any long-term decisions yet. As with any loss, it's necessary to step back and take some time...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

DH and I raised three sons, too. During their childhood the hand of learning was applied to the seat of knowledge when they needed it. They all grew up to be respectful, respectable young men. I, too, started when they were young. I would tell them that "I'm the mama and I don't care how big you...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

My husband has fun with those phone calls, too, if it's a female caller. He lets them go through their whole spiel, then asks them if they're single and if he can have their phone number. Some of them have actually hung up on him! He finds it rather amusing... Bee - our home sounds like...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I haven't clubbed anything to death yet - that's what I keep DH around for (er, for him to do the clubbing, not for me to club). He has the little aluminum wham-bat on hand right inside the garage door. One day the dog had a coon trapped in the well-house, so I called DH to come down and kill...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

They're cooped at night, free range during the day. They would start out in separate coops for now, but the plan (at the moment, anyway) is for all of my chickens to share a coop this winter. If that doesn't work out, I will separate them again. I currently have two flocks - my old brahama roo...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Bee and Al - I will admit I have never personally known anyone who has died from botulism by water-bath canning. I was not raised in a household where canning was done. I had to learn myself, and only know what I've gleaned from the canning books, university extension material, etc. I'll admit...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I just want to keep things as smooth as possible. They live 4 hours away, he works 56-60 hours a week at a very stressful job, which includes weekends and holidays. He's working both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Makes it hard for the family to get together. She works at the same place, but in a...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I like having dogs, have had them all my life. BUT - they are dogs. Not my babies. DIL calls her dog and cats her babies. That's fine. But I refuse to have a "grand-dog"! My issue with this dog isn't the chickens. It's that she actually calls him up onto my couch to cuddle with her, when my own...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I don't know how you could convince them that their little darling won't be a threat to your chickens. I think you may have hit the nail on the head with the "wait until they get their own and come home to a yard full of dead chickens" solution. The most memorable lessons are the hardest...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Galanie - I hope you can work it out. My son and daughter-in-law have a golden retriever that they bring every time they come to visit. He's never chased my chickens, but that's because I've never given him the chance. I have two roomy coops with attached 12x16 runs, so when we have visiting...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

x2 PLEASE do your research!! NEVER can meat using a hot water bath. Just because someone has done it with no problems so far does not make it safe. Don't take my word for this, or anyone else's for that matter. Read, study, do your homework. Invest in a good pressure canner. It's well worth...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Believe me, I get it. When you deal with people, you smile when you have to. I save all my "real" thoughts for when I get home. DH finds it quite amusing sometimes.

Bee, I love it when you tell it like it is! It's a good thing I didn't have anything in my mouth because I would have spewed it all over my computer when I read that!

Around here, they're referred to as "rats on a rope".

My husband and sons continually remind me that "cute" and "tractor" do not belong in the same sentence. But I agree, it is a cute tractor!

Bee, I just love this! I heard it a few weeks ago. DH came into the room as I was sitting here giggling and laughing out loud. He asked me what was so funny, so I played it for him. This is a man who doesn't show much, but he sure laughed at this one.
