I have zero chicken experience, @miss lydia's your gal! From what I understand, yes, you'd want to keep the newly hatched chicks away from the water. Mom will want to get in. I think the big issue comes into play during the incubation time(s)... But since chickens will hatch at 21 days rather...- HollyDuckFarmer

Thanks Kass. I just removed all I could see. I thought for sure I'd missed their emergence this year.... We'll see how the plants recover. My idea was that since that Plantain seeds contain cellulose after soaking, that might help the plant at least retain moisture at the incision site. Will...- HollyDuckFarmer

Nope. This is the larva, altho http://m.almanac.com/content/squash-vine-borer mine were much much smaller. The adult is a red and black flying insect, she looks sort of like a wasp. I used those pellets when we had a freak thaw and everything got wet. I'd say they worked very well for that and I think they don't seem very dusty, IMO.- HollyDuckFarmer

@armorfirelady This year I'm planting a big garden. I am thinking that I will be somehow allowing my ducks access to the Melon Patch area, which should measure about 64 square feet. I grow my melon and squashes propped up on tepee trellises, so I'm not horribly concerned about the poop factor...- HollyDuckFarmer
