My previous silkie had something stuck at one time.. i made a little plate of olive oil and grit and i coaxed her to eat some. By morning everything had worked its way out!
Do you have a cue for them to go to bed? In my ridiculous setup, i say, lets go goodnight, and they head up... but do you have a separate light you turn off or anything? If so, you could do your cue then put one on the roost, let the others follow. Or bribe them with food!
That's ok, sometimes the extra toe is just a nub anyhow.. they can miss one or have an extra. All my fancy chickens have come from the bantam bin at the feed store, so i also feel lucky!

Do they need them thick? My girls are new to laying, but they push all of the bedding out of the way (maybe because it is not clean.. they don't have an official nest box yet). But they are done w their business within a few minutes. I wonder if thicker is better when they are broody?? Or do...
