You are right aart. The tyres are no good if you want to move the frames about.
I have my tyres around the edges of the chook run which prevents the hens from undermining the fencing and gives them more places to perch so I don't intend to move...
Glad you like the idea. I've settled on using a rigid mesh to cover the top as it doesn't bend under the chicken's weight and they can't get their beaks all the way to the soil and pull the grass up by the roots. I hadn't thought of using screws and washers to secure them. Thanks for the idea...
I'd steer clear of sight hunting dogs (like greyhounds) and terriers. Because they have been bred to chase and kill small prey you will be training them against their instincts.
That said my 3 dogs mostly ignore the chooks and one is a terrier x border collie. The others are a German Shepherd...
Do you have space to make them grazing frames? This could stretch your grain further too.

Herbs in the first tyre and grass in the second. I have 12 tyres in the run altogether with a mix of grass seeds and oats in most of them...
We can get a lot of fresh growth on the native plants in Autumn and winter. With all the rain we've been having we should see an explosion of new growth.
We have a creek running through our car port at the moment and the poor chooks are sopping wet but we are thankful and managing.
