I just didn’t put the covers on at the bottom since the chickens wouldn’t be able to open them. Also, I have my feeder inside the coop and I don’t have problems with pests getting into the feed. In the storage area of my chicken...
using pellets...it doesn’t leak at all. duck tape solved the crumble issue...but after switching to pellets...i don’t think i would ever use crumble anyway...what a waste...and creates more dust in the non coop area.
why do they sell crumble vs pellets? pellets seem like a no brainer.
one thing i have learned is to use pellets and not crumble in the hog feeder. the crumble is too fine and some leaks out. after about 200 lbs of food...i switched to pellets..,
I have one of those as well. It is an excellent feeder. I wanted a feeder that could hold more feed...but aside from that, those feeders are excellent and well constructed!
the top of the “hopper” has a lid. they haven’t jumped on top of the feeder...but they have scratched bedding into the trough...although, i haven’t ever had to clean it out...they do.
I haven’t had luck with waterers that have a trough. It seems like they kick bedding into it...which wouldn’t be a problem except it’s getting cold enough now that the wet bedding will never dry and it will freeze around waterer.
i throw feed on the floor to help encourage them to scratch the deep bedding. i haven’t noticed extra feed around this feeder. the feeder isn’t super wide but they free feed whenever they want and it’s been certainly ample for 24 chickens. It’s actually the same width as my “Grandpa’s feeder”...
there’s not really a place to jump on...i guess they could jump on the very top but they don’t. the feeder part has a 1 inch rim all the way around. hogs spill more feed than chickens...so keeping feed from spilling out isn’t an issue.
they don’t seem to make any mess with the food. i have used a few different feeders. first i used an old wood trough that was about 3 feet off of the floor but it was annoying to fill. then i used one from a company called Grandpa’s Feeders and it was well built but with deep bedding the it...
look at second pic...the feed is indoors...i also don’t live in an area with a lot of pest animals. i live on a farm...with predatory pets...dogs and cats. Ironically, the dogs are no o help...the three cats kill anything that moves.
if you look at the pics above you’ll see it. there’s no cover on the feed part but i don’t have mice/rat/opossum/raccoon/fox/weasel problems...and when do...it ends fast. :)
We don’t have rats...we have 3 barn cats. However, the coop is seamless...not even a mouse has gotten in...but probably because they’re all dead on my patio ;)
I am going to modify my back roll outs to hold more eggs.
i grew up with a lot of chickens...one great thing i have learned...and you prob know this...place the roosts as high as possible and boxes low...like 24-36.” growing up we had about 75 boxes in a 30x100’ coop. the roosts were same...
Just got a hog feeder...and holds 100 lbs of feed...with a 50 gallon food safe barrel for water...and back roll outs, you can leave 24 hens for a week and not worry...#low maintenanceeggs
