Free ranging my aseel have done wonders for them. The stag can fly with my JF hybrids across the yard to get a meal. They're also very agile when they run. Nothing like the awkward things they were when I first turned them out.

My aseel continue to develop and thrive under free range conditions. I'm a little curious to breed an entire flock of pure breeds and turn them loose to see how they do. But I've got enough chicken projects on my plate.

My mystery bird did have a nice, beautiful, tail that filled in quickly. Then after only a couple days of him free ranging my bulldog got a mouthful of them. So they'll have to fill back in. If you look close, you can see the sand gnats swarming him.

My Wahls are continuing to develop nicely. They're 100% free range now. It took 2 weeks for them to catch up to the other free range birds in terms of agility and wing strength but they're keeping up well now. This is an odd chick that its mother mostly abandoned after its first week or...

Greenfire Farms isn't too far from me. My understanding is that the Liege was created by crossing whatever the Belgians had access too with large oriental gamefowl like Malays. So it wouldn't surprise me that a Leige would have aseel-looking traits at different points of development.

I was surprised to catch both the mystery game and the aseel cockerel crowing this morning. Several weeks younger than my jungle fowl when they start crowing, and generally the JF mature faster than normal barnyard chickens.

The mystery game has been moved to the next grow-out brooder. In truth he's probably ready to join the 24-7 free range flock. I've turned jungle fowl out much smaller that have done fine. But because he's pretty unique I might let him grow out some more before I let him sink or swim. I'd like to...

I have a mystery game. Hatched from a grab bag of game eggs that could have been various American strains including roundheads, or alternatively cobra aseel. Its got some aseel looking traits. Thoughts? Its going on 7 weeks old. The bird immediately to the right with its head facing in the same...

Is that tornado weather there? The heat, humidity, and rain are the daily norm here. Setting hens here will endure it fine so long as they nested under something thick like palmettos that will give them a little cover. Which I’m sure little pens would be a different proposition than free range...

Sorry to hear it. Yesterday evening I sat on the deer stand into the night hoping to burn a depredation permit on a velvet buck or yearling doe. The deer bailed from the blueberry fields just before dark when the noise started. My nearest neighbors are 3/4 of a mile away through the woods but...

This is a stag I raised, gave away, and just reacquired. He’s going to be a brookcock for my American game bantam project.

This photo would have been near perfection had Hei Hei not blinked. The sun was behind a cloud but I still like how the blue on the wing shows off. I need these cockerels to grow up so I have some more free rangers besides Hei Hei to photograph.

He does, but its hard to judge that behavior. He hangs with all 11 chicks and the 2 hens that communally raise them (only one hatched them) but also hangs with the other wild type game hens too. They have always sequestered themselves as a flock from the 12 domestic layers. That’s why Hei Hei...

Couldn't that be said of any American-bred game lineages, where theoretically they shouldn't have been used for what is now illegal activities for several chicken generations now? I could see the argument that OEGBs have been removed from the pit far longer than American lines have. But if...
