Sounds like a good plan. I’ve gone back and forth with the pressure treated wood. Chicken run was not PT and now I’ve had to replace some rotten boards. Guinea and rooster coops/runs are PT wood.
Wow that’s interesting! Similar to 4x8’ frames made out of 2x4” boards? That’s how we framed our chicken run, attached to 4x4” PT posts in concrete every 8 feet. The new Guinea run also uses 4x4 posts in concrete every 4 feet, but instead of framing sections, we just run 2x4 boards horizontally...
Thanks Sydney! The young ones are mostly terrified of me but I adore my guineas anyway. They are endlessly entertaining. Zinfindael is standing at the human door of their new run. I’ll try to take some more pics and post on my new run tomorrow. The run isn’t finished, but it’s usable. We put in...
Babies are six months old so I thought I would make one final post with current pics. We did recently lose one of last year’s babies: royal purple cock Merlot failed to show up at the coop in mid-January. No feather pile, no nothing, so I don’t know if a hawk got him, he got hit by a car… ...
Oh I’m so sorry about the losses, but that’s great that you ended up with two! Any pics? It seems that several of us had terrible hatch rates last year. @Sydney65 had terrible luck with her shipped eggs, and my incubator hatch rate was awful, probably because my turner wasn’t working right. This...
Same here! Monday was so warm I let my sick duck out on the pond for a few hours! Then it got cold fast! I said we’ve been droughty? Well apparently we are under some kind of crazy fire risk on Friday; I didn’t even know that there was a step beyond “extreme”! I am SO grateful that we burned...
3 month update! All juveniles are doing well. Lil Bit is filling out and catching up with its siblings, which eases my mind! That’s LB there in the front. LB is still a little lighter colored than the violets, but nowhere near as light pinkish colored as I’ve seen in pictures of pastels…
The...
Awwww, is Nugget the RP at the top? Such a sweet pic of your original crew. :love He was about the size difference as Lil Bit versus the rest! Did he eventually catch up? And, were you wearing gloves to protect your hands from their germs or to protect the keets from yours?:gig
Awww, which group are those little ones? I see you practicing your guinea whisperer ways with them!
Yeah, the breeder said that I could get bronze keets, but so far haven’t really seen an indication that they are other than RP…
Oh my goodness, Sydney! Such dedication! I really need a picture of your nighttime sleeping arrangements… :gig I like ceramic heat lights and have used them quite a bit for reptiles. I’ve only used with some kind of thermostat controller because they can get so hot but they are great for heat...
None of this group are fully pearled, they just haven’t gotten their adult feather pattern in yet. I don’t have the best baby pictures, but I have a few…
One of the royal purples just after hatching:
A little older (weird lighting/phone camera is making it look grey but you can see the wavy...
8 week update: We still have 10 babies! They still look like babies to me, but I excitedly showed them to some visitors who were like “Where are the babies??” :th I’ve named some and identified three as female. I’ll try the inserting picture thing again:
Lil Bit is on the left. LB is still...
I can’t help but worry for Lil Bit! Geez, I never should have named that keet!!! :th It is growing, but still so much smaller than the others. A couple of the other keets look like monsters next to LB!!! The closest in size is little Monroe, which is probably about 50-75% bigger. The largest...
6 week update: we still have 10 babies! But, I continue my concern for Lil Bit. The keet roosts and forages with its siblings, but it’s still undersized. Yesterday morning was cool (45 F) and I though LB looked a little rough. I’ve been locking all guineas in until 8:30 AM, around an hour after...
Well the adults have been better, but the roosting situation is infuriating! Why do they feel compelled to peck the poor little keets that are next to them on the roost??? My interventions have not been so helpful as it just makes the adults restless and shift roosts, then they move and knock a...
