A meat thermometer isn't a good choice. You can get some cheap aquarium thermometers and calibrate them. You'll get much better readings.

You want a minimum of 1 square foot per bird. Subtract the space used by feeders, boxes, and toys.

That's why I joined. Every time I had a question about quail (before I got any) and did a search, I ended up here.

Nothing wrong with asking here, but you'll probably get better answers in the actual chicken forums. (I don't have chickens, so I couldn't tell you much other than what I'd find online)

That is often the case, which is why many people don't assist. I usually will, but with full knowledge that I might have to cull that chick.

Give them at least 24 hours from pip to zip. If they're still struggling then, you might think about assisting.

You can't tell if an egg is fertile by candling unless you incubate it. I know I've said this before. Some shells are dark and hard to see through, so you might not be able to see anything. Why do you expect activity in an egg that hasn't even started to develop?

It won't, but you're not likely to see much at two days. I recommend patience and candling at day 5 instead.

I feed mine crushed eggshell. I give them oyster shell only when I run out of eggshell.

That looks like an egg from a bird that didn't get enough calcium. The colour of the egg has nothing to do with the colour of the bird.

Good grief, be patient! Wait at least until they've been in the incubator for 5 days.

What are you going to do if you end up with one chick? That chick is going to be miserable and will scream all day and all night.
