I’m adding posts of info for new quail folks as things happen or ideas come to mind. Today was a “quail enrichment” session. Quail aren’t prodigies, so enrichment doesn’t take much time or equipment.
One method— take a rake and pile their grass and hay over to one side of the pen. Continue...
Another general note for new quail parents:
Sometimes you will do the right things, give the right care, and no matter what you do, a baby just doesn’t make it. It really isn’t just because you’re a new owner; it can happen to any of us.
Bummer! The general answer is yes, you should have 1 boy to 4 or 5 girls. But occasionally you can do a higher b/g ratio, dependent on the personalities of the specific birds. If your boys are amorous i think it would be good to just separate them til your new girls get there.
Does anybody have pictures of chicks sleeping in “deadbird pose”? My Halloween chicks are being awfully coy about it, but I think it would be useful for new quail owners to see they do sleep that way sometimes.

Well no first eggs here — I envy you the thrill. :)
Today was a work day for our Bean. She virtually visited an elementary class and looked at their artwork while they asked questions about her.
I haven’t tried either, but... I’ve heard good things about the Nurture Right. There are even some discussion threads about its pros and cons. Even though the turning spaces are for chicken eggs, the turning force should still be gentle enough for a couple of quail eggs per slot.
The best incubator usually depends, IMO, on your pricing range. There are some fairly decent ones out there for probably around $100. If top quality is your absolute number one concern I will always say Brinsea. There’s nothing better than having a bator so reliable you just turn it on, fill it...
If I had “wisdom” for new coturnix quail owners, it would be:
they tend to have a particular aroma. If you’ve done everything to clean and they still have a little funk, that’s just their natural BO (birdy-odor).
They take a LOT of effort to hand-tame. They are a low tier prey animal, so being...
