    Yep, pretty much. I have both HN's and open waterer for first couple weeks. VN's are a PITA, IMO... leaky and can't set the vessel down. Have tried them, not worth the trouble.

    If you live somewhere that it freezes, HN's are definitely the way to go. Plus I don't like the VN's because they are prone to leak and you can set the vessels down. This is about cage bottles, but there's some tips here for installing the HN's...

    I have horizontal nipples in the brooder from the get go......but also an open waterer there all the time until about 2 weeks when I start removing it for much of the day. By then a few have figured out the nipples and others follow suit.
