I'm younger so I had a little bit of this growing up, and it now only exists in my moms neighborhood a tiny amount - I guess what brought the households together was having similarly aged kids, and now the kids are adults so the ties have weakened.

Yeah. SO has rehabbed squirrels before and I get very attached so He wanted me very very aware that anything could happen including releasing them and them immediately getting eaten by a hawk right in front of me. LOL.
One of the 4 was never seen again after release, but the other three still...
I found caring for them to be really rewarding. I didn't expect them to come back after we released them, but the fact that they do gives me warm fuzzies.
We uhhhhh found their nest with a chainsaw when cutting down a tree. One was injured and one was substantially injured so we couldnt even try to reunite them with their mom.
a squirrel afraid of squirrels. poor baby. ours have a healthy apprehension of our cats. I don't know how the 3 rescues feel about each other anymore. (we had 4 but one left the day we released them and was g o n e)
Haha. One of the boys is fat. There are acorns everywhere here. We rehabbed them from 5 or 6 weeks until a few weeks ago. I'm amazed they're still friendly.
My housemate is cooking a "heritage turkey". I dont know anything about it except it wasnt cheap. :lol: It made SO consider raising turkeys again but the slaughter season would be a lot of work all at once haha.
