Have they started laying yet? Are their combs getting redder than usual lately? I've had some hens get much friendlier once they start laying. Especially if there's no rooster, they will see you as the rooster.

That bird is carrying mottling. Maybe check see what hatchery they are getting their chicks from and look up what mottled breeds that hatchery sells... It almost looks like an accidental cross breed as it looks like it's only carrying one copy of the mottling gene.

Well, since ya'll are at it... I got some pullets of the new line of Blue Australorps that Privett Hatchery just got last year. I had gotten that one that was accidentally mixed in with the Black Aussies I ordered a year ago, and she seemed like a nice bird so I thought "what the heck, why...

Wow! What a beauty! We have a couple that live on our property, I've saved them from the weed burner and weed whacker a couple times... put them aside and let them go the next day. I still get really big rattle snakes around the chicken coop, but not the smaller ones. I used to get gopher...

Around here crows are actually a seasonal thing, which I didn't know could happen until I moved here. They come in the winter and work the plowed fields for bugs, and then are gone by spring. It's mainly ravens here and they don't move in the big groups that crows do...

Gimme a minute I'll see if I can remember which hatchery it was that sells them. There's supposed to be a "true blue" and a "true green"....

I think if it were me I would just get some Whitings True Blues... although I don't think they have the muffs, but that wouldn't be hard to breed back in I don't think. Depends on whether you want to show them or just are breeding for your own personal preferences.

That's good to hear. So maybe it's just like when you have a new eyelash growing in and it makes your eyelid all twitchy and weird feeling and you just want to rub and scratch it until you get pinkeye... hahahaha!!!! Or am I the only one that happens to??

That's about the same results I got at the same age, about 5 months. I usually do the bullies first, the ones that are the meanest or are human aggressive. I like a low stress flock. After that I do the ones that I'm sure I don't want to keep for breeding, since I'm going for self sufficiency...

My three Australorp pullets hatched February 22 and started laying about 2 weeks ago. Im sure yours are getting close. It's actually kinda fun to watch. One of them kept going back to the nest to look at it and singing the egg song like 4 times in a row her first time. It was like she was...

I'll have to agree with getaclue. When you consider that eggs incubate between 37 and 38 degrees, then 30 degree summer highs aren't all that bad. I'm in Arizona, and I've got eggs in the incubator right now with daytime temps around 36-37. Ya know what that means? The incubator doesn't...

I figured. The blue pullet that came with my Privett birds and one cockerel that I'm pretty sure is carrying the blue but is coming out mostly black, they are both bigger than the rest. All the rest of the black cockerels are maturing faster than the one, too, and he's got a different...

Mine don't like to be handled either. I have three that are around 4 months old now and only one of them will let me be even near her but won't let me touch her. I have one or two cockerels from the same batch that will let me touch them currently. I just assume its a hatchery bird thing...

Honestly, they all look like hens to me, but I could be wrong. Here's one of my black cockerels at exactly 6 weeks, just for comparison.
