Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

Thanks to everybody who helped with this. I learned a lot and hopefully other folks did, as well.

Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

Lost him. :( His throat was obstructed again this AM, and he was back to not being able to eat or drink effectively. We removed quite a bit of the obstruction, but either we grabbed some tissue while we were getting it, or it was too firmly attached, but it opened a vein and he bled out. :(...

Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

Great idea. Wish I'd thought to preserve a sample. I"m about to pack up and go to a farmer's market... will treat our patient again this AM before I take off. He's still pretty much asleep just now but made it through the night OK. What we've done should get him through until I'm back home...

Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

I think you're right about the water, Kathy. I wandered through the forum and the interwebs and am pretty sure this is thrush, rather than canker. The two prescribed cures for this (nystatin and copper sulfate) aren't immediately available locally. An old thread here on BYC recommended using...

Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

He smells bad, but I figured that was from all of the wet feathers. Will look into canker. Thanks for the link. Edited after reading: We don't see a lot of wild doves around here, but plenty of starlings. Am going to go grab my husband out of the greenhouse, he's been out there long enough...

Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

Very minor noise when breathing, and not consistent. Occasional vocalizations. My husband is still outside but I grabbed a headlamp and it does look like he has a deep obstruction of some sort. Looks like wet food, kind of an off-color yellow mass. Good call. Dr. Google is telling me that...

Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

I'm thinking that most of the water is running back out of his beak. He is swallowing but I don't think much of it is getting down. I looked in his mouth again and didn't see anything, but will try again when my husband gets back in the house and can hold a light.

Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

Just felt his crop, doesn't feel like there's any water in it at all. The front of his body is wet but not soaking. The water is down about a quarter inch. I need to go take care of everybody else, will come back and watch him for a while.

Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

Thanks for the link. Great resource. I'm happy to report that none of it really fits, so I'm confident my boy will get better soon. :) Honestly, I'm utterly stumped. I guess all I can do is wash my hands/change clothes after I deal with him, and watch.

Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

And.... he is awake and back to drinking. Not interested in the food. Some bloody discharge from his nostrils.

Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

It’s so hard to say. I just opened my office window to give him some natural light to wake up to. Crop is empty. Not much poop overnight, he didn’t eat much yesterday. What there is is normal. Swelling seems to have gone down somewhat. His breathing is quiet but every once in a while he...

Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

Just went and woke him up, poor sleepy guy. Nothing untoward with either ear. A pretty good sized scab on the non swollen lobe. He does have what looks to be a feather injury on one of his wings, and I’m almost wondering now if he didn’t lose a fight. I almost never see those guys fighting...

Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

There are three widely spaced water access points as well as puddles and snow banks, not likely that he was denied water. No additives. The swelling is firm. Not bony but you definitely have to push a little to dent it. At no point has he exhibited pain, including when I was pushing on his...

Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

I lost a hen in early 2018 to an upper respiratory infection of some type. 2020 hindsight says it may have been MG, but she didn’t have the characteristic bubbly eyes, nasal discharge, etc. And it took her about three weeks to die, my poor turkeys went from symptomatic to dead in hours. Of...

Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

Update - not sure if he ingested some of the water from drinking so quickly, but he is down to about the last tablespoon of water from the quart and now his breathing is sounding somewhat congested occasionally.

Rooster with swollen ear, won't stop drinking

Howdy, all - searched the threads, couldn't find this one addressed so am throwing it out for the brain trust. My favorite roo (red sex-link, about three years old) showed up at my office door this AM making distressed sounds. It didn't sound like rales, more like he was crying if that makes...
