On Japs, the "Jap" chickens came mostly from Japanese settlers to California. At some point they were Shamo, probably not "O" Shamo, probably more like "Chu" Shamo. Along the way they were most likely crossed with some American birds, by the time you get to the named Jap lines they have a pretty...
I no longer have any laying hens, so I have used the old coop and pen for this family of Asil Ga Noi blend. It came up in a stand of lambquarters and is very jungle like.
The AKC is not a legitimate breed registry. They have ruined almost every single breed they have ever gotten their hooks into. Following their nonsensical ideas would be a good way to ruin poultry as well. Not linebreeding is a good way to not have breeds, or at least not breeds that resemble...
I've got some cackle hatchery games, about a week ago, three different pullets laid their first eggs. I've got them penned separate. The odd thing was that they laid two eggs the same day. Two did it one day, and another did it the next. Haven't laid an egg since, but it's been cold.
How big does a brood pen need to be? I've got some 5x5 dome pens built. Thinking of making some 4x4s soon. Is this big enough for a pair? I've got some 8x8 size pens, too, would that be big enough for a trio? I'm talking about a pen to put a hen and a rooster in, and I suppose take the rooster...
The DNA mapping stuff is often raising more questions than answers, not just with chickens. If you compared at the DNA sequence of a hatchery Fayoumis to a Sri Lankan Jungle Fowl, I can see where it would be easy to "prove" that they weren't related. If you went to the Fayoum lake bed and were...
Yellow legs are present in grey jungle fowl. A lot of DNA research is trying to say that there is only RJF in chickens, but I think they are just covering for Darwin. Scientists can't let scientists be wrong.

This has some of the same info that I remember reading on post #15, but it is all good reading. Fascinating stuff. The history of chickens is the history of us, really. Some of...
I read an article awhile back, and I wish I would have bookmarked it. It was talking about different junglefowl species and their possible contribution to todays chickens. One of them (the Ceylon, I think) was sent as a gift to a pharaoh, about 200 of them which he turned loose in a garden, and...
They seem to be healing up, but I was just wondering if I could just go on and do it so they could just heal up once. They mainly just seem to loose the points of the comb to freezing. I just don't want them to get infected, mainly. If you could keep them in groups of 40 or 50 they could stay a...
I've got some frostbite issues on some 4 1/2 month olds that I was going to let get a little bigger before dubbing, should I go on and do it or let them heal up and then dub them, or just go with the natural frost dub?
What is peoples general experience with e-bay eggs? I'm not talking about hatchability, because I know that is a crap shoot whenever you ship them. I'm talking about them being what they are supposed to be. I would think that there are people out there trying to preserve the genetics, as well as...
Here is a Cackle black. Or maybe a Sid Taylor/Australorp cross. He seems to be put together a little better than the other ones, a little finer and longer legs. This one has an identical twin but he lost his tailfeathers to a roving gang of turkeys and now they don't get along.
