I found your forum while researching chickens earlier this month and have learned so much from your great group that I just had to join in! I have always wanted chickens and after a bit of convincing ,my dear husband of 42 years is now onboard ( he says "overboard" )
!We took the plunge and purchased six Production Red chicks at Tractor Supply earlier this month. My girls are just three weeks old today and growing so fast . They are getting along well ,pearching on my hand and getting to know their human mommy! We are working furiously preparing their new digs which is a converted 8X8 storage bldg with a nice picture window and 8X5 attached porch. We have insulated it well and are about to order our fencing. Future plans will be to build a chicken tractor for them to range safetly during the day on our 21 acre property.
Our interest in animals has been lifelong and we have raised and shown Norwich and West Highland White Terriers for over thirty years.Presently we have 10 Norwich Terriers,3 Westies and one not so ferral calico cat that adopted us five years ago. We retired to South Central Virginia in 2002 from Springville NY. Our goal is to provide a great home for our chickens and in turn were hoping for fresh eggs for ourselves and our furkids.I look forward to being part of this great group!

Thanks ! Westies are great dogs however with that terrier temperment of theirs I'm not so sure how well they can be trusted to babysit my chickens LOl!
Sounds like your flock is dripping in pedigrees as upposed to my little Production Red muts.

I agree with you. I dont think Westies would be good around chickens. If I had to start chickening all over again, I would only have Black Sex Links and Barred Rocks...just my preference. Nothing wrong with Production Reds, I've had a few before and they are outstanding egg layers...I still have one Red Sex Link, she's a troublemaker for sure but I'm keeping her because she's an excellent layer. Mine are all hatchery chickens except my rooster.

Greetings and welcome! I have lots of fond memories spending summers on my aunt's farm in Bedford, Virginia, including playing with her chickens!

My family and I designed built a chicken tractor last summer, if you go to my BYC page (link on the left) you'll see it. It's probably too small for your needs though.

From Bedford VA. Norwich are wonderful little dogs. I used to have a friend who raised and showed them as a junior years ago.
