Our 3 Buff Orpingtons and 2 White Plymouth Rocks are 20 weeks old. No eggs yet. Yesterday morning they were so loud that they woke us up at 7:00 a.m. Today the same thing. I have to actually go out side to quiet them. We have nice neighbors and not so nice neighbors if you get my drift. They have never done this before and are usually very docile. 2 of them grumble and 3 mumble, so it is very comical when they do start chattering. But they have never been loud. Is it just a fluke, or do you think it could be because they are near their laying time? My DH thinks it is because I have been gone for a week and they sensed I was back home. I returned late on Friday so I didn't see them until I went out on Saturday morning to quiet them. They do like me and I sit in the run with them and pet them etc. But I have missed seeing them before, so I don't feel it is because of me.....Anyone have any ideas?:/

My girls are the same age and are getting louder. It's those "teenage" years! Mine are practicing the egg song and one has begun to lay. I'm guessing that their age and the onset of laying has something to do with it.

so mine are a year old now and let me tell you it has nothing to do with the egg song!!! some breeds/individuals just are loud mouths! I have two out of my 8 that started maybe at 10 months of age well after starting to lay! there isn't much toucan do about it aside go out like you do. although if they get used to that THEN they start "calling you over" ugh. anyway I have tried everything but short of rejoining... good luck. just being realistic...

Are they free fed? I've noticed that some of my birds get loud when they are hungry =)

Their food and water is available at all times. Maybe it's just their way of saying they want more! They didn't get loud until later in the morning today, closer to 9:00 am, not 7:00 am like the past 2 days. They have a hopper type feeder in the coop that is filled every other day, so it is never empty. I guess we will just have to wait and see what comes of this. Thanks for your reply.

I hope so. Can't wait for the eggs, and maybe a little quieter on the home front! The noise does not bother us at all. It's others that concern me. Anyway thank you for the reply. It's always nice to know someone else is going through the same thing you are and that you are not alone! Ah, yes the teenage years.......thought those were all gone for us!

Thanks. I know what you mean about being realistic. It is what it is. I hope it is an "egg song" because I can't wait for eggs any longer!!!!!! But if not, we will deal with it...perhaps I could invent a little muzzle for chickens..........:D

You are welcome! Good luck with your birds

If you invent a muzzle please send it my way! I have one that just won't shut up. I have tried everything...she is a yapper. I love the way she sounds actually but I am sure my city neighbors are not as happy as I am. Their windows are facing the coop :(

You have my sympathy.....our girls have gotten so loud especially now that they are laying. We were told the Buff Orps were very quiet and docile & that the Barred Plymouth rocks were even quieter. Well when we went to go get our day old chicks, they didn't send barred rock, but white rock, which at that point makes no difference. Who could resist that fluffy little ball of fuzz? Good luck with the neighbors and you are first on my list for the Chicken Muzzle when I get around to inventing one!!! LOL :D
