My favorite girl "Gizmo" started limping 2 days ago. I am new to the chicken world, so I am not sure if there is a bigger problem here than just a sprain. Poor girl, as if getting around when you are a bantam frizzle isn't hard enough! I looked up information on Bumblefoot, but I don't see any scabs or anything. Is this possibly a beginning case of scaly mites? A few of her scales are lifting slightly, but I thought maybe she was just picking at her sore leg...none of the other 13 chickens seem to have any scaly mite problems. Like everyone else on here who has never dealt with scaly mites, I never want to either! Below are some pictures. Sorry they are not the best, she is not a fan of being held so I went in the coop last night to try to get a close up and the lighting wasn't quite right.

I don't think she has bumblefoot, but if you want, you can soak her legs in some water with Epsom salts added to help remove any infection that there may be. She does appear to have a mild case of Scaly Leg Mites, so I would rub some Vaseline or oil on her legs to smother the mites before the infestation gets more severe. I'm not sure what is causing her limping, as the Scaly Leg Mite situation doesn't look that bad. I'd clean up her feet (soak them in some warm water), and see if that reveals any other symptoms.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I don't think it is bumblefoot either. I wasn't sure if this was scaly leg mite either since I am not sure why that would cause her to limp around with such a mild case. I will try to investigate further and see if there is something I am missing. Hard to tell with all those frizzle feathers near the legs.

No Bumble foot but I cant tell about scaley leg. Just in case rub Vet RX on her legs. if she has scaley leg she should be cured.

I need some help. I do not believe little Gizmo had scaly leg. We went through the process of treating it just in case, but none of our other 12 chickens show any sign and she has not healed. We prepared for bumblefoot surgery, but she does not appear to have bumblefoot. She was getting worse, dragging her leg behind her now until it was bleeding. We brought her inside in a dog crate for 4 days to rest and kept her leg wrapped, but when we re-introduced her to the flock today a few of the other chickens tried to attack her. She cannot put weight on that foot and it will not curl around my hand. It is like it is paralyzed. On the foot she is walking on, the scales turned dark and they are peeling off...sort of like a snake losing its skin, or like scabs coming off. Never dealt with this before. She went under the coop to avoid the other chickens and I kept checking on her, but I just went out and couldn't find her. My dog loves her, so I sent her out to look and she found little Gizmo hiding under a crate. I think the other chickens chased her under there. She is not doing well. I brought her back to the dog crate, but her spirit has been broken I am afraid. She is exhausted and not standing. Any suggestions?

How old is she? Do you know if she was every vaccinated for Marek's disease? Marek's disease or some sort of infection are my two top guesses.

She came from a place that sells chickens as their business, but I do not know if she was vaccinated. She is about 8 months old I believe.
