Hi all! I am a chicken newbie and could use some advice from those with more experience.
I have five 6 month old buff Orpington hens that have been together since they were a week old. I didn't see much aggressive pecking order behavior until about a month or two ago when they really started...
Hi, my name is Vicki and I am new to backyard chickens. I helped my roomies in California care for 20-30 chickens for a couple of years and found them fascinating. I am in Texas now and I got barred-rock chicks this spring. I raised 8 chicks and gave 5 to a farmer friend. I kept just 3 for...
Hi All,
I just built a chicken tractor out of electrical metal tubing (light weight and will last better in my climate). I didn't think about the perches. They are metal also. Any idea what I can wrap them with to help keep the girls warm in the winter time?
Thanks,
Valerie
Ive decided to make a new coop as my older coop was getting a bit cramped and ive noticed how it was falling apart. I have a brahma cockerel and some brahma pullets in the flock so i wanted to put their bigger bodies into consideration. I have realized that my brahmas have a problem jumping up...
i need some suggestions on how to setup perches for our chickens. We will have 20 chickens sleeping in here and need to make sure we have some roosts setup.
My initial thought was to put several 2x4’s going left to right. I want to take advantage of the height of the coop.
What do you think?
As dedicated DIYers my husband and I have accumulated a collection of random concrete blocks in different sizes, concrete pavers, and bricks that I used both for my in-town flock and my new, country property chickens.
First thing in their life-cycle, concrete papers under the chicks’ feeder and...
My chicken coop is a repurposed large room in my old barn that I fixed up for my first flock. They have plenty of roosting bars (made from trees) and places to "sit" if they need to, for example when they huddle up if it's cold.
So even if they have several spots to choose from, they always...
I have purchased 15 turkeys that I plan to sell for meat . However I can’t seem to find a straight answer on wether they should be using perches/roosts . I read that these can lead to breast blisters? So if I plan to sell them for meat should they or shouldn’t they have a perch/roost?
I post way too much on here, lol.
A few years ago my brother in-law built a large wooden chicken coop, but very sloppy. I have no idea on how to build one, however, I could use ideas. So I have some questions.
How do you get rid of water stains?
How can I build a new perch in there without...
Hi All, My silkie hatched out 3 Orpington eggs and has been an excellent mum for the past 12 weeks, however, mum and chicks refuse to roost. The silkie has always preferred the box. I have one other chook (a bossy French Marans) who is happy to perch, but the silkie and the chicks all squeeze...
Hi all,
I have 2 hens who have started laying and a younger chicken who I think is about to start laying (they're all around 22-24 weeks). About a week or two ago I started to notice poop in their nesting boxes, and this morning I found their eggs with a bit of poop on them (Yikes!). Today I...
Hi everyone
This is my first post in the forum after being able to find plenty of advice on this forum over the past 2 years since owning chickens.
When I first purchased my hens, I had a simple coop where as the hens walked in, they effectively walked onto the perches which were just above...
I have looked up so many ideas on pinterest for something the chooks can climb. There wasn’t a lot of variety but mostly people nail planks to tree trunks or have outdoor deck chairs available or build something. we have only just planted baby trees, and hubby doesn’t have time right now to...
Hello, we constructed a new Chicken Barn and it's very spacious with everything they could possibly want. The chickens refused to sit on the natural perch that my husband built. They prefer to huddle on the floor covered with pine chips.
Why would they do this it's been about 5 days and...
So this spring I'm planning on letting my 1 and 2 year old hens hatch some chicks (non of them have ever hatched any as this is the first time they will be with a cockerel) but my 1 year olds all perch on top of the nesting boxs instead of lying in them when sleeping, but they go to lay there...
