Chickens are some of the most versatile and beloved domesticated animals, serving as sources of food, companionship, and even pest control in many parts of the world. With a wide variety of breeds available, each possessing unique characteristics and traits, choosing the right type of chicken...
I had 1 adult speckled Sussex rooster, 1 adult speckled Sussex hen, 1 adult sapphire gem hen, 1 adult buff orpington, 1 adult sapphire gem / speckled Sussex cross, 1 adult orpington / Sussex cross, and 6 nearly fully grown wyadottes bullets. They free ranged in my yard and get put up at night...
Hi.
End of August, I have traded three of my 3 months old Runner ducks for two pullets :
The silver laced Wyandotte was actually a cockerel... so I gave him away, because I have no need for a Wyandotte rooster for now.
But whatever...!
Fact is, I am not sure what breed my yellow hen is...
My 4 year old Sussex has this weird fleshy growth, I think it’s on the side of her neck or just above her wing area. I noticed it last month but she ran away from me (she’s never taken a liking to humans) and it seemed to disappear so I just thought it was perhaps a bit of meat that fell on her...
Thought it'd be fun to have a chat thread, I often feel weird posting in other people's chat threads 😅.
As the title may suggest I have no intentions to keep this to a particular topic, it'll match my brain :D. I'll likely chat about and post photos of any of my animals, from my chickens to my...
Hello,
Thank you in advance to anyone who can assist. I am new to chicken keeping. I ordered seven baby chicks from MPC. They are 6.5 weeks old currently. I ordered six girls and one boy. However, I have my suspicions that some of my bullets are actually roos.
I have an assortment of breeds.
1...
We have a small flock of 4 backyard laying hens. We are looking to add another 2 hens (live in city limits, so we can have 6 hens total, and hopefully on the quieter end, pullet chicks). We have 2 Barred Plymouth Rocks, a Sapphire Gem and a Sapphire Olive Egger. All are pretty great foragers...
Hey There! It’s been a while 😅 yeah so, Snowy (Purebred Light Sussex) started her first moult. How should i approach this situation? Her behaviour has changed a bit. She has been broody for a few weeks, and stopped laying eggs. our yard is covered in feathers, and she has many pin feathers on...
I have decided that every year I will raise chickens for my county fairs charity poultry auction. This year I am doing buff orpingtons and possibly my BSL rooster we will see if he gets his act together. I want to select the best breeds that are not an outrageous price but are high in demand. I...
I bought three pullets from a local--a classic Craigslist deal that listed them as pullet hens. The seller said they're two blue sapphire Plymouth rocks and one silver laced sussex. They're around 6 weeks old. When comparing them to photos online, I'm not so sure. What do y'all think? One of the...
Hello! and I hope you follow along and enjoy this breeding plan.
PLEASE OFFER SUGGESTIONS AND CRITICISM WHERE NEEDED! Don't worry about pulling punches, I'm a grown man, I can take it.
To start I am going to say I first saw the Speckled Sussex chicken when I was 14 years old (I am now 42)...

I've yet to come across an active Sussex chicken thread, so I am hoping this will become it.
This is for any Sussex related discussions. Whether that's breeding advice/plans, or you just want to talk about your pets.
I'll post about mine in a bit :)

I like taking pictures, so this is where I'll share some of them :p
This is Spices doing some exploration before returning to her nest of eggs.
This is Thor asking why I am looking at his girl. Thor's my nosy supervisor who always checks what I am doing.
Some of my babies.
I'll add...
I did the finger test where you check how far the bones are from the cloaca and we concluded it was clover! Her egg was a cream colour. and a question: is egglaying regular straight away or does it take a while to become regular? Because she hasn’t laid since that first egg.
