When you butcher your birds do you do the entire bird or just rip off the breast trying to decide if it’s worth keeping the whole bird
I use the whole bird and pick it clean. Don't like waste and want to respect the bird. The chickens get the carcass after I'm done and they recycle most of the bones. If nothing else, the backs make a tasty broth.

I forgot to update...started with 12 quail eggs and removed 1 clear. Out of the remaining 11, I had 10 hatch (the 11th passed after pip but before zip). They are in a tote with paper towels down on the bottom and are getting along great! They have the cutest little peeps!

I love the sounds that young quail make. I find their sounds to be very soothing.

View attachment 2342079 I know how to kill and butcher it’s just realy not worth it. That’s why I had made plans with someone to take all my birds and give me half the meat. Raising for eggs. But he is out of town and roosters are getting very violent. Needed to cull the flock. Just was wondering if it’s worth doing full butcher or just take breast off. Eather way just killed and cleaned 4 birds I’ll eat them later in the week. Also I have seen people use gardening shears instead of scissors. Do you think they would be better to cut off head. I also used this mallet to stun bird first it’s a weighted carving mallet
I use poultry shears on chicken/turkey heads. The little notch would work fine for quail I think, and is also nice for spatchcocking, cutting off lower legs, etc. The shears are not very expensive. But for beheading quail, I've seen videos of people just twisting the heads off. It's a moment's work & appears effortless.

View attachment 2343293 My rooster that I saved apparently got attacked by the other birds and it looks terrible. Should I kill it or will it probably heal
i would separate and treat the wound (a bit of neosporin or blukote) and he should heal in a few weeks. you can give him a friend if you have one very docile after a couple of days if necessary......just watch closely if you do.
