The older the house is, the more likely that the studs are 16" on center. The problem is that you don't know which end of the wall they started laying them out.This house is old.

If you cant find studs use whats called toggle boltsI dug two out of the garage and used them both to make sure I found a stud.
There is only one stud in this area which doesn't seem right.
I was going to move one of the brackets over to where the stud was but I think my way will work.

I know. I felt it...that's why I used the door hinge too.no not strong enough
