Hey guys and thanks for any advice - we recently had babies hatch (a week ago) - we moved them into the house with mom until they are big enough to go with the big girls - but anyways we put them in their own run in the yard yesterday while we cleaned the brooder out - they are fine when we put them back and they were fine this morning - my husband took his son to school and all within 30 minutes the check was dead. We don’t know what we could have done wrong, or what we need to do better. Thanks

Can you tell if it was injured? Any blood apparent on it anywhere?

Can you recall if there could be contaminated soil or grass where you placed the playpen? Insecticide use, any paint thinner or oil drips?

Did these chicks hatch under a broody? Did all the eggs hatch or were some eggs "duds"? If you had unhatched eggs, did you inspect the contents for fetal development or rotten material?

What was the temperature outside?

we looked at it this morning and there wasn’t any blood or any type of injury - no we haven’t treated the yard for anything like that - these eggs were from the mama and she sat on them and did all the work - and she had only 2 eggs under her no duds - our chickens are our pets and it just saddens me that this has happened and I don’t know what else we could have done. Thank you for responding

Silkies are prone to neurological disorders due to their vaulted domes. It may have been something as simple as Mama hen delivering a disciplinary peck in exactly the wrong place on the little head when that chick had a weakness there. Freak things do happen. It's sad when such an adorable little creature dies suddenly like this.

What was the brooder temperature at? 65 is pretty cold for chicks that little (unless they are hen raised). Too big of a temperature change could stress them out and bring out illnesses.
