I've got my first 4 chicks yesterday and one has developed a terribly swollen vent. It is slightly cracked and she struggled to push out her poop. I'm washing in warm water, blow drying and applying antibiotic ointment but worried it's something that will never improve. Other three chicks aren't pestering her that I have seen but I'm keeping close watch. Any advice for a first time appreciated.[IMG]

Welcome to BYC. She may just be constipated from dehydration and cold, but I would continue keeping her vent area clean and dry. Feed her a few drops of molasses to act as a laxative, and mix some probiotics in her water or mix a small amount of plain yogurt in her feed. Sometimes I will mix feed, raw egg, and yogurt into a mash, and chickens will usually eat that readily. Pasty butt is common in the first week to 10 days, and hopefully will clear up. A prolapse may occur with constipation, so you might want to put a drop of oil on her vent opening.
