This one has got me confused. I originally thought it was a hen but then I heard it making some strange sounds. As a first time chicken owner I’m not sure if she was attempting to crow. Anything idea if she’s a he?

I have a bunch of speckled Sussex. I’m pretty sure it’s a hen. Sussex roosters are very……….roostery? By that age a roosters tail feather would already start swooping to the back. And their grown up tail feathers come in as a shiny green/black. But even the hens have a nice big single comb so I definitely understand the doubt. And by the time they are fully grown, the roosters waddles are huge. My 4 Sussex roosters all have 2-3 inch waddles.

My profile picture is actually a Sussex rooster.
