Hi there. I'm new to hen keeping so I find this site brilliant for answers. I found an egg (small) in the hens box. My hen is 14 weeks old, no older, as I raised them from one week old. I thought it might be another 6 or 8 weeks before it laid its first egg. At the moment I have one hen and one rooster so it's definitely from the hen. Upon collection and in my excitment I just wondered whether someone might have put it in there for a joke, however, the egg is smallish. Do you think it's possible for such a young bird to lay an egg? I think hen is a black australothorpe?? It has access to garden and has a very varied diet. Thank you.

It's possible. I'm fair sure my baby was 14weeks when she laid her first egg, 16weeks at the oldest. So No it's not likely, but yes it is possible.
